Explorer 1998
Hi
l have bought an explorer 1998 model and have a problem with the braking system, when starting to break steadily at first everything is fine untill the speed has dropped off to about fifteen mph.
Then the brake peddle goes hard, this point the brakes become none operative and it amits a sound close to a wheering noise, the only way then is to release the brake and brake again.
Could it be air in the system this has been mentioned, or something else . Hoping somebody out there has the answere to the problem ,as i think the explorers are a greate vehicle

welcome stephen

On your brake booster there is a large hose coming off of it. This hose is a vacume hose. Check this hose for restrictions. It could be the valve, it could be a cracked hose, it could be carbon in the intake. This WILL fix your problem. Good luck!

brakes

:roll sounds like your power brake booter is bad.;)

You say they become non operative...but does the truck try to stop? In other words, it's stopping, but your pedal isn't controlling anything. I'm wondering if your ABS is kicking in and that's what you are hearing. Having that happen as the truck comes to a stop is a common problem.

I'm with Cobra, sounds like ABS kicking in. You can check it by pulling the fuse for the ABS. This will deactivate the ABS and your brakes should function as normal. Easy way to check it out.

You can feel it if ABS kicks in, the pedal vibrates.

To check the brake booster put your foot on the brake pedal and then start the truck. The pedal should move lower with the engine running.

Explorer braking problem

Hi steve (lincs.)
Thanks for help so far, pulled the ABS fuse and went up the lane today,
brakes still same old problem, next thing is to replace vacume hose that comes from the brake booster,

Hiya and welcome to the forum......After you have done all the above...Its worth bleeding the brakes fully. Do this till you have fresh fluid at all points and lock the nipple on the down push. NEVER let the fluid run low on this operation or you will have major issues as it will need a special tool to bleed the balancer valve in the split system.

YOU need two people to do this right....locking at every down push to take the air out of the system.
Good luck and tell us how you sorted this!

Hi Steve,

Had the same problem on my 1999 Explorer unplugged the ABS and the problem stopped so i first replaced the ABS Sensors but it actual turned out to be a faulty ABS ring in the Hub and as this is part of the Hub you would need to replace it.

Trying buying a second hand hub from a good Explorer Breakers.

Only problem is to figure out which side the fault is on so you may need to replace both side 1 at a time!!!!

Hope this Helps.

Andy.

Or do the proper diagnostic tests with an ohm meter and figure it out the first time. Each sensor has a resistance value.
