Explorer doesn't move when turning on 4wd

Hello guys/gals, I just used 4wd on my Explorer and when I make a sharp turn it makes a clunking/popping noise. If I turn the steering all the way to either side it seems that the car loses gear even when giving it gas ... is this normal??

Yup, its normal 4x4 operation. Do not engage 4x4 on dry pavement or solid surfaces, it causes the drivetrain to bind up, creating the popping noise. 4x4 is only meant for soft, loose terrain.
