Hey all, I just bought a 98 explorer rear axle with 3.73's and a L/S. Just curious about the rear brake maintenance, how do you get to the e brake pads, and the left side e brake on mine has no pad, just metal shoes! I figure that was a mistake! Do you need to remove the axle to access the e brake shoes? It appears so after a quick look tonight. Oh, and how much approximately do new rear calipers run??

I think on your 98 you have rear disc brakes right?

The e brake pads are located inside the rotors. There is a little drum type design built into rear rotors that is like the typical drum brake setup only more simple because it is just for the e brake. You should not have to go into the axle at all to access the e brake.

Did you already remove the rear rotors? The e brake should be right there. Maybe on your left side it is worn down.

Thats the best I can do. Never owned a car with rear discs.

Good luck.

I got that far, the rear calipers are really easy and the rotor comes off after the caliper but it seems that the third spring for the e brake system is hidden behind the axle. Thanx for the info

i assume the previous owner drove it with the e-brake on? i have a 96 and recently replaced rear rotors/pads and the e-brake shoes looked brand new. the e-brake "adjuster" is located behind the rotor guard (for lack of a better term). you just pop out the plastic plug and use a screwdriver to back off the tension. i know this isnt really what you are looking for, but i would think access to the spring would be somewere around this area. hope this helps...

I got the axle from a wreck and dont really know the history. One side is fine but the other has no indication that there was ever a pad there, its just the metal part of the shoe, no pad on either shoe! Its a 98 axle, I tried to get the rotors turned but they were also junk, oh well, thats why they call them junk yards!
