explorer rear wipers

The problem is with the arm. May people bend them to cover the entire window since most do not actually wipe the entire window. My 99 sport had it so bad that i actually notched it and bent the arm to be welded by a friend. If you bend it too much it will not go back to its intended resting place and get caught like you stated in between the window and body.

I would bend it little by little to get the correct angle. You can also do a search to find the original thread on the fix that a few members came up with.

this is what a member of the fourm did a few years back. It seems to work for everyone for contacting the entire window. As for your problem with it getting stuck i would suspect the peice of plastic that it rest on is not doing its job.

I think I was the first person that modified those fingers...

A dremel works well, although I ended up disassembling mine to prevent damaging the spring.

Is the 98 the newer style liftgate?

If so, that was a common problem, the wipers had bad springs, which didnt give it enough pressure to get the whole window, I believe they had a recall on it a while ago

Does anyone know where I can get the proper spring? I've had a similar problem with the rear wiper; the blade only wipes the last few inches of the arch. I've only owned it since 2007 and I'm assuming this recall was never performed on it.

Well, I finally got a few minutes to work on it last week end. I grinded the part like in the picture and I repositioned the wiper. I shot the nut with WD40 and I unbolted the arm. After a bit of trial and error, I managed to set the wiper so it would stay on the back window when I turn it off. It's not perfect, but at least it works when I need it! :)

When I first purchased my 99', the rear wiper was not touching the window when turned on. I went and bent the wiper arm in the middle inward to make better contact to the window. I turned on the wiper, and still was not receiving good results. Better results, but not good. I bent it just a bit more for even better contact, and gave it a try. Worked great and still is a month later.

I've been having a similar problem on my 98 EB. I replaced the blade, but when wiping only 1/3 of the glass on the furthest part of the wiper swing gets cleaned. The remaining 2/3 of the glass on the initial swing is unscathed. Did you try replacing the spring? I thought about that and had looked for an adjustment screw, but couldn't find any way of adjusting the pressure. Have you tried any other adjustments? Thanks!
