I am a Ford guy for the most part.. Last FOMOCO product was a 98 Lincoln Town Car. 4.6 V8 with all of the toys (and then some!) that my recently aquired Explorer XLT has.

The last auto forum I subscribed to was the Lincolns online. I expect that this forum will be even more useful to me and I hope to contribute also very soon. The drive line is very much shared as well as engine controls etc.

I aquired the 2004 XLT for my wife just this week to replace a very dependable 97 Tahoe that has been very good to us. It is just time to get something a little newer and slightly smaller for her. The XLT is from a work colleage that was the original owner. 100k on the clock and in pretty good condition.

My most serious and immediate concern has to do with the rear differential. There sure have been a lot of unhappy customers with respect to premature failure of the rear end from what I read with simple google search.

Infact I might have passed on this ride entirely after reading what I have read already about differential failures and the TSB about metalic cross contamination of the ground coat resulting also in unacceptable corrosion and rust through (most notably the hood).

Too late now I am in for good!

Mine is making a bit of nrise right now. I am considering pulling it out and doing an overhaul in spite of the complexity of this build. I have rebuilt several eaton and ford cabbge heads but none that were independant suspension with a mounted housing. I also can't say that I have ever heard of any major component failing 3-5 times in 125k miles (as many owners report) without a recall or class action suit.

I understand that the housing is aluminum instead of cast iron. Stupid!! Do you have to be an engineer to design something that has as much stress on it as this design does and not realize that premature failure may occur??

Anyway just wanted to say "Hi!" and am now off to investigate this forum to see what I can learn about the Explorer!
