Picked up the Explorer at the dealer today....

Transmission leak
Seal $7.87
Labor $622.77

Humming from front wheel
Drivers Front Hub $177.98
Labor $92.95

Total with tax - $960.14
Cost for me....$100 deductible

And I have only owned the Explorer less than 2 months...

Now the bad part... I had the double bump when coming to a stop. Consensus here was the slip yolk.. turned out to be missing bushings in the rear end that allowed the drive shaft to clunk around. Warranty wouldn't cover it because it was missing parts and not defective or worn parts.
Bold and Washer Kit 4 @ $14.99 - $59.96
Insulator 1 - $34.99
Insulator 2 - $17.99
Labor $267.73
Total with tax $384.11

The warranty is for 4yrs or 48k miles... looks like I may get my moneys worth in the end...

Within the first year of my extended warranty I had to change the 4x4 module. I think it was close to $500. I have no deductible so paying for the extended warranty still worth it. Warranty is now payed for and I have up to 100k or 2010 bumper to bumper coverage.

For some E-warranties work out fine. I have heard a few complaints on them never wanting to cover anything.

I am sure in the end it will pay for itself. Love my exploder, but I know she comes with baggage.

Were they missing because Ford forgot to put them in?? If so that's messed up...you shouldn't have to pay that at all in that case.

I dont know who did previous work on the rear... I bought it 2 months ago at auction and dont know the previous owners....Therefore I dont know if Ford did the work or not... Either way I had to pay for it... But its much better now..

Who is your extended warranty through? I just bought a 02 explorer this past Friday and need one fast.

Universal is the name of the company.
They are run my Phoenix American -
6303 Blue Lagoon Dr
Suite 225
Miami, FL 33126
877 208 8765

They just covered a blend door on my Explorer.
$49 for the part
$650 for labor plus tax.

So in 3 months, my warranty has paid for itself.
I paid $1900 for my warranty for 4 yr / 48000 mile.

give them a try, they get a recommendation from me.

One thing, they will not cover existing problems, and the warranty kicks in 31 days and 1001 miles after you buy it.
my rear axle problem wasn't covered because parts were missing, and they wont cover missing parts. But now that I have fixed it, they will cover it in the future if something happens.

Mine has also become close to paying for itself. Ball joints and faulty oil pressure sender within the first few months of having the truck. Rear wiper stopped working, and now the multifunction switch.

The switch with labor was near $200 making the warranty well worth it. And the day beating on an '02 Malibu was priceless :)

Wynn's Extended Care was one of the best extended warranties I've sold. They covered things most the time no questions asked. Only time I really heard of them sending a claims adjuster out was when a job looked to be too expensive in their eyes, or if an unfamiliar shop may have been trying to make fradulent claims.

Our service department never had a problem. If a claim came in, they paid it. But then again, we had almost 100% satisfaction and never did anything dishonest when repairing the vehicle.

I feel sorry for all you after reading all the problems you guys have had. I had my 02 for 2 years (got it with 68,000 and got rid of it with 92,000 miles) and it was problem free. all i ever did to it was oil change, window motor and fuel injection cleaned. now i have a 05 and it appears to be even better engine wise (41000 miles and well kept). to think someone bought a truck and in less than a year, needs all that work. i check my purchases out closely however. i know sometimes things are not apparent when you buy it but i consider myself lucky so far when it comes to buying used. (knock on wood).

i guess i will just take my chances and avoid paying nearly another $2000 for possibly nothing i will ever need. i suppose its nice to have for peace of mind.

Dont forget, my $1900 warranty was for 4 yrs. Less than $475 a year or $40 a month for piece of mind is worth it to me. I have bought 3 vehicles now with extended warranties and they have all paid for themselves.

my 96 explorer had a $1100 warranty, and upper and lower ball joints, AIC valve, rear view mirror with auto dim, sway bar links all paid for.

My 02 Taurus had a $1300 warranty, and Ford put $2700 into the transmission.

Now the 04 Explorer with 4 yrs to go and its paid for already too. I think its worth it just for the piece of mind.

My warranty is through Wynns. I'm overall happy with thier service until now. I have a squeaking ball joint, obviously in the process of failing which they will not touch and a very loud whine coming from the rear diff. They won't touch that as well. I'm sure both will progressively get worse until the point they need to be taken care of in the next 20k miles.

while i know lots of people have troubles with their cars and trucks (hence auto repair shops and transmission shops), i am 43 yrs old and have own "several" cars and trucks, I have yet to own one with major problems> maybe it is because i have been (a) lucky, (b) check them out throughly before i buy, (c) sell them before they need extensive repairs, (d) all of the above.

I have a 1992 plymouth sundance that i have own for 10 years and other than the routine stuff plus a few minor stuff (oxygen sensor and themostat and water pump) i have driven over 100,000 miles on it without needing any major work done on it. my family car/trucks i usually keep 3-4 years then sell to get something newer and while its running good and looks good to get the most money back on them. i guess if i were to buy something and need something major within the first year, i would certainly love to have that peace of mind as well, but havent been there yet. i certainly have yet to spend 2,000 dollars on any of them in the the time i have had them in those 3-4 years (least none that an extended warranty would apply).

i dont fault anybody for having it. i just think if i am going to pay 15,000-20,000 dollars, it better be a sound ride and not need another 2,000 in repairs in the time i own it. sometimes stuff happen, but i am sure the manufacturers didnt build them to fall apart in the first 6 years if properly taken care of.

Most, if not all extended warranties will cover only mechanical failures. They won't cover a part if it's only in the process of squeaking, clicking, clunking, or rattling. At least that's been the case with any that I've had experience with.

That is true. Unless something is physically broken, they dont replace it.
However I just had a loud bearing, front drivers, replaced with no questions.
