Has anyone had any problems with using the factory wiring to power a aftermarket head unit? I have a kenwood excelon 815 that is using a wiring harness to connect to the factory power wiring only. The problem is that it is skipping, and I have sent it in for repairs twice now, once for six weeks and once for nine weeks, and the thing is still skipping. What I am wondering is if the factory wiring is not supplying enough power so that when I hit a bump (small or large its very random what causes it) the display will blank for a second. I can't believe that after two attempts at fixing it, Kenwood would have not been able to pinpoint the problem (or maybe I'm giving them too much credit). I ran a ground from the hu to a spot that I knew would be a reliable ground but that didn't seem to help at all. Just wondering if I am alone in this, I don't want to be without music for another 6-10 weeks.

i have done dozens of installs using the factory wiring. every single time, the headunit performed flawlessly. either there is a faulty positive power wire in your explorer (since you already took care of the ground), or the headunit is defective beyond repair. take it back and exchange it for another of the same model. if it works, GREAT. if not, then you have some serious rewiring to do. i hope everything works out.

The store that I bought it at wouldn't take it back since the first time I brought it in was past their 30 day window. The told me Kenwood would only consider replacing it after they have tried to fix it 3 times, which seems like a bunch of crap to me. They also told me that Kenwood might be more willing to give me a new hu if it was professionally installed, to rule out install problems. This just seems like they are trying to get more money out of me, I have done many hu installs and all worked perfectly. Very frustrating!!!
