Hi, I have '97 with SOHC. Recently it started to knock at idle and for a few seconds while accelerating. Knocks come from passenger side cylinders block (somewhere at the valve area) and are similar to diesel engine. I have read lot of usefull information from this forum but before I get out the engine, please help me to answer the questions??

1. Does the rear timing cassete problems results with rattling rather than knocking ?

2. what is more probable cause of this knocking ? timing chain cassete (tensioner) or worn valve element (spring, lash adjuster, rocker arm....)?

3. Is it absolutely neccesary to remove the engine to replace the rear timing elements ?

thanks in advance

Archie

It is impossible to remove the rear timing set in the vehicle. I have never heard one "knock" usually it is a rattle or grinding noise especcially on start up. This reminds me if anyone has a bad start up rattle try changing the hydraulic tensioners. I am curious if this solves the problem I was told it does. I have not bought a sohc in a long time
