[SOLVED]Fan blowing out of defrost vents, won't shut off?

Hey guys.

Wondering if anybody could help point me in the right direction for a fix, I tried searching, but can't seem to find the exact same situation.

So I hop in my Ex last night at 10pm to drive home from work, and as soon as I start 'er up, the Fan started blowing hard out (not cold or hot, just ambient) of the defrost vents at the base of the windshield.

So I look at the climate control, and it's OFF. I tried playing with the settings on the climate control, and when I turn it on it starts to blow out of the selected setting, but when I turn it off it goes back to blowing out of the defrost vents.

Needless to say, it's starting to drive me nuts!

What do you think, electrical... relay, wiring short or something?

Im having the same exact problem as we speak. Ford told me to replace the head unit and quoted me 5 and change to do so, so of course I went and bought a used one and as it turns out.....that aint the problem! My personal mechanic now seems to think that it is the blower motor switch. So I will purchase one this weekend and see, but Im still not sure and yes it is annoying as hell.

Brutal!

I found some diagnostic steps for the dual automatic climate control, I'm going out in a couple minutes to see if that yields anymore clues as to what the problem is. I'll let you know how I make out!

I haven't gone out and did the diagnostics yet, but I got to thinkin about what you posted about the relation to the blower motor operations.

This post has a guy with the exact same problem as us and he solved it by replacing the Blower Motor Speed Control unit in his truck which is a 2002 Explorer.

I looked in the 2005-2006 Ford DVD manual I have, and it shows the exact same part # 19E624 for both my 2004 Explorer and your 2006 Expedition.

If that's the problem it's only about a $30 dollar fix, lets hope that's it!!

No, the Blower Motor Switch is a separate part.

Looking in the manual, your vehicle does have a Blower Motor Switch, but my Explorer doesn't seem to have one.

Another symptom I noticed is, when I do turn on the climate control the fan speed buttons don't do anything, it's just stuck on high. So that's leading me to believe it IS the Blower Motor Speed Control!

Oh and BTW I did the climate control diagnostics and it didn't yield any trouble codes.

Well ford lists that part @ $61.00 can I find it at an advance or an autozone any cheaper? I remember that you said it would be like a $30 fix so Thats where I got the blower control switch from because it was like $28.

Yeah sorry man, I misquoted the price. I was looking at used ones.

Still 60 isn't bad!

Ok, so I ended up being sketchy with the price quotes, but it WAS the Blower Motor Speed Control on my vehicle. I ended up paying $92CDN with taxes, but still saved getting the stealership to diagnose and charge me an extra 1 hour of labour for a 5 minute job.

Partial Part #: 19E624 (Just supply your VIN number to the parts department)

Grabbed the new part from Ford, disconnected the battery, popped the glovebox down. 1 screw out, unplugged the old one, popped the new one in. Bam, good as new.

I found this thread from a Google search so I signed up. My wife's 2006 Mercury Mountaineer was doing the same thing. Using the post above I was able to find the oem Ford part on eBay for $60 shipped and confirmed it with the seller and jhard (thanks jhard) that I had the correct part. Installed it last night and it fixed my problem as well.

Doesn't look like anything is wrong with the old part, other than the metal fins looking oxidized and kind of dull. Would that have anything to do with the failure? I guess I'm not really sure what this part does...

Sorry the late reply man, but no problem! Gotta love the internet for sharing fixes, I know it's saved me quite a bit of cash over the years!

As far as why the old part goes, I noticed a little bit of rust around that round diode looking piece in the middle of the fins... so it's got to be corrosion related, seeing this part sits right inside a vent channel with moist air constantly passing by.

good deal you got it fixed.

My 04 fan control only worked on #4. I just replaced the switch the dail plugs into on the climate control head unit and it worked. My FIRST thought was the thing you replaced, but I was wrong. weird.
