i had to replace my warter pump when i did mine i useed a 4 inch grinder on the fan cluch to get the fan off

I've seen them both ways.. The fan shroud should say reverse rotation if it is.. The last X I was working on was NOT reverse rotation. It was a 93 motor IIRC (might have been a 91).

This fan clutch and my blazers fan clutch have ben the 2 worst headaches. I think Id be better pullin' the motor and swappin' it out than dealin' with this. I havin' the biggest problem gettin' the back wrench that slides over the pulley bolts to stay on place. Any more ideas???

You can tell which way the clutch is threaded by the warning on the fan shroud.

Explorers are RIGHT HAND THREADED but REVERSE ROTATION.

If you've got a left hand thread clutch, it's going to be tough to get a replacement.

As for the tool slipping, sometimes they aren't a perfect fit over the bolts, you can either slightly loosen the bolts so the tool fits over them better, or clamp the sides of the tool in a vise to narrow the wrench jaws a bit, then tap it over the nuts with a hammer. It usually takes several tries, but once you get the right leverage, the tool won't slip and the clutch nut pops off.

This was my truck we were working on. The fan clutch was on my 94, swapped over to my 91 then swapped to my 93 motor. All have been RH thread.

Also use this tool, it's much better.
