I've got the tools and see it has right hand threads but can't get the nut to budge. The wrench strated slipping on the clutch nut so I stopped. Is there a secret to getting this off?

the wrench needs to go counter clockwise and a chain wrench holding where the serp belt would go needs to go clockwise.

No there's no secret, they come off as you would expect. The tools should work, it just sounds like it's tight. I've had mine off four times with no remarkable problems.

counter-clock wise if I'm standing in front of the truck looking at the grille??? If so, I've been tightening it. Great... :(

Lefty loosey, righty tighty.

These are not reverse threaded as in other vehicles.

It seems that those darn things are either practically fused together or loose. Put a little dab of anti-seize on it so it dosen't rust on if you ever get it off.

You can get the ford fan clutch tool set on loan from Autozone and it has a wrench that fits on the bolt heads on the water pump pulley to keep it from turning. It also has a hole in the hande so you can put a 1/2 breaker bar in for more leverage, allthough you will probably bend the wrench if you resort to that because its china stamped steel garbage. Repeated whacking :hammer: with a rubber mallet might be a better bet.

And yep, its got standard threads, so looking at the front of the truck you need to turn the clutch to the left (counter-clockwise)

i have an f150 300 six and the fan clutch would not come off.

i ended up removing it with the water pump and the auto parts store hit it with an air wench to get it off.

the tool sets all started bending.

it was a pain in the ass from living in ohio all its life.

I use an old 1940's 9 inch adjustable automotive wrench with an extension pipe on the handle to loosen the nut. These old wrenches are fairly flat, so they can fit into tight places. To keep the pulley from turning, I put a socket wrench on the belt tensioner and turn it in the direction that increases tension. With more tension, the belt will keep the pulley from turning while I loosen the fan clutch bolt.

When I did it, I was already going to replace the water pump, so when I couldn't get it off in the truck, I took the whole assembly off and completely demolished the fan clutch to get a normal wrench on it. Even then, it was a major PITA

I rented the AutoZone tools but they didn't fit. I ended up using a monkey wrench (smooth jaw) ... and something else, but I forgot what it was.

Just beware the AutoZone tools may not do the trick. If I had to do it again I'd try a different chain store in case they have a different (more accurate) set of tools.
