Fan clutch wobbles on water pump, 5.0

I’m not expecting a terribly long life. I’ve come to terms with it.

My OD light is now flashing. If this things doesn’t straighten up it’s going to get traded for a Lexus instead of being parked.

I hope it straightens up. Go drive the pissoutofit, that's how I've been treating my mail truck. So far the tail light bulbs and one headlight keep giving trouble, plus the random coolant loss. It keeps going though, I'll throw some money at it soon.

I can’t. If I drive it the water pump will come unglued. Every time it shifts through second it comes on. I’m assuming a solenoid or incorrect gear ratio code, I guess. Functions ‘normal’ so no bands are broken.

Yeah, it's probably just needing some minor work, the solenoids and accumulators etc. You need to get it home to work on it some.

That's me with my white one, the drivers window doesn't roll down anymore, nevermind the fact it was rigged to go to begin with, it just stopped, nor do any of the locks do their thing, all manual, except the hatch, thank heavens. When I get my V8 Eddie Bauer done I'm going to pour into this a bit, it needs a bit of TLC, or rather, a LOT of TLC, just annoyances, drives fine and all that.

How many miles you got? I'm curious a bit.

I’ll work until I’m dead.
@Mbrooks420
In 1998, Bill Clinton drove us to "drop out" from the system, which we did, vowing to never again pay a cent of income tax to Washington. Only 56, S/S was a long way off, but selling our home in Phoenix and buying a 100 acre farm in Missouri Ozarks using only 1/4 of the dough, gave us "nest egg" living, which I augmented in 2002-2003 by teaching high school math, asked by the local school district. With that money I bought a '96 Explorer and '96 F-150, both used 4X4s, having money left over. We raised a lot of what we ate, which required hard work, heated solely with firewood, having 80 acres or so of hardwood trees. I took the S/S at 62, best move I ever took, never looked back doubtingly.

Being retired and still active has been the most fun part of my life! We are 2 miles from the Colorado River, not necessarily boat people, but take full advantage of the 10 Resort Hotels in Laughlin (Nevada) with their wonderful restaurants, monthly offers, and the like. This month's AVI offer was a free Chef Pierre (Sara Lee) frozen Cherry Pie, 46 oz., one for each of us! imp

Truck has 146k on it. Driving it home would be about 250 miles. The truck is in super shape, rust wise. Last year was its first winter ever. Everything still works, except the drivers lock switch. And, the passenger manifold is cracked of course. It still has the factory muffler and tailpipe.

You will live longer doing that. Is that good or bad?
I’m sure plenty would argue me living longer would be a bad thing.

It wouldn’t be bad for me. I like to work, and I’ll eventually have my own controls engineering business, with a few select companies I have service and emergency contracts with.

At 146K I doubt the transmission issue is anything to really worry about costing much, likely a crappy solenoid. I'm not gonna tab into the whole discussion about living longer and all that since I'm a teenager.

I’m sure the transmission just needs a simple replacement part. It’s just a let down after my last Mounty. I pulled way over the limit, plowed with it (commercially) for over 8 years, ran the transmission OUT of fluid three times, and never did anything besides refill it, and it had 100k more.

I’ll probably do a valve body, and replace the solenoids. Then, after I’ll puke all the fluid out of the cooler. It’s got about 40k on it.

That's what you want to do in your own garage, at a pace not being rushed. Away from home you don't want any issues other than trivial stuff. I hope you get it home easily.

I drove my recent 92 Lincoln buy, about 375 miles from NC. It was a rarely driven car, everything was suspect. I got lucky it did okay, the steering has a ton of play in it from what I think will be TRE's, and the radiator leaked a lot. Old tires, battery cable loose, original hoses, plugs and wires etc, not a fun drive home. Do what you can.

Honestly if your going to do a water pump on a 20 year old truck you might want to change the timing cover gasket too. It always starts leaking after a water pump replacement in my experience.

Second thing is the o/d light flashing is more concerning then a leaking water pump. I'd check codes and mess with it before dumping money into the water pump repair.

Where are you located now?

I’m in Cleveland Ohio. The timing cover will be getting a new gasket.

I’m not terribly worried about the transmission. The fluid is still nice and red, and it shifts appropriately. Worst case scenario I’ll limp it back to PA, park it next to my other Mounty and swap it out.

$485 motorcraft pump, timing cover gasket, bypass hose, installed sync drive, oil and filter change, tow, and a 1 year warranty.

Sucks I couldn’t just do it myself, but all in all not terrible.

The transmission is next, I guess. Time to call in a favor. ( I rebuilt a Sea-doo 951 for my tranny guy. It happened to be at his shop and wouldn’t run when I had some work done to my other Mounty. I had happened to have rebuilt the same ski for a buddy of mine, so I knew all the tricks). I did it very cheap, but told him I wanted a good deal in the future.

Not bad at all, I'd consider that a win!

I supplied the sync drive, and should have had him swap out the plugs, but oh well.

There's no better time to install the cam sync than when the timing cover is off. No excuse to not line it up perfect. That whole job is a strong $350+ labor job anywhere so you definitely did good. I own my own small shop and I would of charged a similar price for the work performed.

Well done, that's a fine result, got it done and with nice parts.

Most of the trans rebuild is R&Ring the trans. Doing the work out on a bench, is the part you want a goo transmission guy to do. But that's a few hours of work, and the parts ought to be $200-$300 plus the TC.

Question. Would driving it with no power steering ( threw the belt) put air in the system? On the way home from the shop I picked up a death wobble in the steering I’ve never felt before., I drove a half mile with no belt, and included a few 90 degree turns.

Yes it would. Cycle the steering wheel lock to lock while your truck is running at warm idle. You want the rpms as low as possible, higher rpms agitate the fluid.

You might of also shot some fluid out the cap while driving with no belt. I'd also check fluid level but I'd assume you're good there.

Very cool. Burped it all out, and all seems well. No OD light yet either. Though, I’m not expecting that to disappear.
