I am trying to find shocks for my 97 XLT that are 1 1/2 inches longer than stock. None of my local suppliers can find anything for the front end. Please recommend a brand, model and supplier.
Thanks

bilstien 5100, rancho 5000 and 9000, skyjacker, pro comp
get an Off Road mag or a summit or jcwhitney or go online. i had access to a local 4x4 shop that carried the bilstien. the guy at advanced helped me looking through other vehicles that use a stud top shock in the front. they also carry rancho now at advanced auto. i believe mine were for an f-150 but im really not sure. they were longer and wider in diameter. i got gabriel vst. and ilove them. i had the bilstiens but i abused them and they were high miles. i recomend the bilstien if you have the money.

welcome to the best offroad / explorer websire on the web.
good luck!

4x2 or 4x4?

I don't beleive anyone makes a shock that much longer for the 4x4, since it is somewhat custom to clear the front driveshaft. If you're 4x2 then you should be able to find one pretty easily.

A few of us have modified stock length shocks to work with our Torsion twist lifts. I've extended them about .5" and Gerrald extended his 1".

How did you guys do that?

Edelbrocks shocks are made 2" longer than normal, also Old Man Emu shocks are made for 2" of lift.

Ray, Edelbrocks say they are good for 0 - 2" inches of lift, but the ones I used had almost no dampening effect whatsoever when I installed them. It was almost as if I didn't even have any shocks. Combined with the fact that I don't run swaybars it was outright scary. My theory is that they were operating out of their intended range, even if they were long enough.

That's a complicated valving system they use to dampen and it's possible that it is not as effective when it's two inches off.

Are you saying the OME shocks are DESIGNED for two inches of lift, or that like the Edelbrocks they are good for "up to two inches" of lift? If they are specifically designed for the lift, I'll look at the OMEs myself.

BTW, the Edelbrocks are supposed to be first class shocks and are very expensive and many here have gotten great results with them. HOWEVER, if you do a lot of offroading I do not recommend that you buy them. My front ones blew apart - the retaining rings at the top and my rear ones loosed their oil within six months after I bought them. I talked to my 4wpw guy last week while ordering some stuff and discussed turning in my rear ones for the guarantee but getting another brand in place of the Edelbrocks since mine didn't seem to be heavy duty enough to take the abuse I was giving them. He informed me that almost all of the Edelbrocks he sold to 4 wheelers in the last year were beginning to be returned. He won't even sell them now if he knows you'll be taking them offroad.

They're evidently a great street shock, but think long and hard before buying a set for fourwheeling.

Gerald,
The OME's are made for a 2" lifted Explorer, and are superior to the Edelbrocks. I used the OME's before I put the TM lift and really liked them, just wish they made them for a 4" lift. They go real well with their 2" lifted springs, which is the combination I used at Moab 2000. There is a world of differance in construction between the two. Edelbrocks use 12mm diameter rods and the OMEs are 18MM. Just about everything on the OMEs is heavy duty made and machined, not stamped.
They were made for off-road use.

how much is a set of OME??

Michigander,
I don't know as I did the Beta testing on them here in the U.S. and got them for free. I hear that they are sort of pricey, but IMHO they are every bit worth the price.
Tom Wilk has them and the OME 2" lifted springs on his Sport, and thinks they are great too.

Okay I got the OMEs ($60+ each) and updated my registry entry with the info I promised earlier on this thread.

The OMEs are awesome! Literally heavyduty (twice as heavy as other shocks). I'll test them in a month when I go to Moab and Truckhaven.

The only bad thing is they are a truly obnoxious shade of canary yellow. Time to get a can of spray paint out.

I sorta liked the color. It looks better on my Green X as opposed to your blue EB

this may be a stupid question to all of you, but if i do an add-a-leaf couldnt i modify the shock mount in the rear to go over the leaf? and for some reason i thought when you did the TT that the front shocks went up and stayed at there normal length, if that makes any sense. cause my parents are buyin me Bilstein shocks, $65 a pop, and i really want them but if what you say is true when i do my TT i will have to sell them and get the OME shocks. but DA** im confused!
