So, it is that time again, new tires are coming soon. I am in a debate though on what I want this time. Last time around, I got the BFGoodrich All-Terrain which have been great and given me over 4 years and over 60,000 miles. But, I am really not looking to spend $150 a tire this time round. Not even sure how long the Exploder will be around in the future.

So, I was looking at other tires from other manufacturers and have narrowed it down to two different ones...
I can get both for around $100 a tire mounted and balanced.
I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with either manufacturer or even these specific models...

Brand: Yokohama
Model: Geolander H/T-S G051
Size: 265/75R15

Brand: Firestone
Model: Destination A/T
Size: 30x9.5R15

I do very little actual off-roading, but I do work around some dirt roads and get a little muddy during the rainy season. Have had to use the 4x4 in many occasions to get myself to and from destinations. And, I am not going to lie, I like the look of an aggresive tire.

I do very minimal snow driving, but when I do it is pretty severe sometimes (I take an anual trip to the N.C. mountains for some snowboarding, a few years back, we had eight inches of snow in one night.)

Right now, I have seen a lot of excellent reviews for the Firestone tire so that is currently the one I was leaning towards. Can you help me confirm my vote is a good one, or maybe swing me in the other direction?

Yokahoma

Yokahoma is clearly a better tire, I have chosen them for all of my vehicles and have never had a single issue with them.

Firestone is clearly the better tire. Check the ratings on tirerack (for example). Destination ATs are excellent. They ride/handle, and are as quiet as a highway tire, but have the capability of an All-Terrain. They would be far better in the snow, and off road vs. the Yokos.

ive got the yokohama geolander a/t's and i love them. my dad has the h/t's and they've lasted him a long time. before that he had firestone destination h/t's and they didnt last for ****. yokohama ftw

I have Yokohama Parada Spec-X's on my XLT and and pleased with them thus far... Only about 15K miles on them.... Never had Firestone to be able to comment on them....

The two tire models you mention are very different, other than price.

Yokohama makes fantastic tires. I've owned at least six sets and never had any problems.

If you were limiting the choice to just those two options, buy the Firestone Destination A/T, because it is better suited to the conditions you drive in. It is not a bad tire, but there are better ones.

I would NOT get the Firestone's. I've had a set of Firestone Destination AT/s on a Cherokee I was unfortunate enough to own. One got a huge bulge on the sidewall an was replaced under warranty. Those tires maybe had another 5K on them at 15K miles. I sold the heep then.

The geolander AT's on my explorer have 20K on them and aren't even half worn.

I have the Firestone's and LOVE them. I have them in 33x12.50xR15. Very quite and have a good ride. They did very well in the Indiana snow this winter for how wide they are. 2 weeks ago I took my mountaineer to the Badlands off-road park and these things are awesome for an A/T. The only time I lost traction was when the wheels came off the ground. I would stop in the middle of a steep hill then start again and the tires didn't even think about breaking loose. They took some major sidewall abuse and didn't seem to phase them. Probably will be getting them again if I don't switch to a M/T.
