Hey all,

I finally got my first Explorer ( 93 EB w/ 155,000 on it ). A lot of miles, but the engine, trans and drivetrain are still strong. That said, I am having a few annoying problems that I hope you guys can help with.

First, I didn't think to check for a spare, but there isn't one ( just a rusted, broken steel cable ).

I'll be going to a junkyard to find a spare, but I'd like to get the cable and everything else. Also, I have not yet seen the jack and the tire wrench ( and I've read about some rods that I'd need to use ) No manual w/ the truck, so I can't reference it !!!! Also, I'll need to know how to get it down when I find it on one...

So,

A - Where can I find the jack and wrench and rods ..

B - What years will be a fit for my truck ( if the j/y has a 91,92,95 etc ... )

Second question is about the hatch lock assembly. It doesn't like to lock or unlock. The black up/down pin for locking kinda stays in the middle and is always unlocked. I took the hatch panel off to look at the mechanism, and here is what I've noticed. There are 2 bars that attach to the left and right side of the hatch ( they control the locking " hands " so the hatch grabs onto the pins on the body ( excuse the lack of terms, I'm new :) ) They are attached to the handle on a plate that goes above and below the handle. They would only travel 7/8's of the way and kinda hang up.

When I used both hands to extend them, the lock would work ( I could use the knob inside the truck and it would go up and down; lock and unlock ) As soon as I turned the handle on the exterior, wham, stops working. I lubed the assembly really well, but doesn't do the trick. Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance,

Nick

first welcome to the site. i have everything you need for a spare plus the tire and wheel. if you want to drive a little you can have it. your jack should be in the back on the left behind the panel. the rod is under the hood.

Hi Nick and welcome to the site.
I can answer the easy stuff.

The OEM tire jack is a cheap bottle jack "thing" kept in the drivers side rear compartment in the trunk. You just open the two black tabs and remove the panel. I believe the rear window washer reservoir is there as well. If the jack is missing then replace it with a good quality hydrolic bottle jack.

The rod you mentioned is used as a "crank" to lower the spare tire and to work the Ford jack. This rod is "L" shaped about 3.5ft long 1/4" in diameter and kept in the engine compartment. (mounts across radiator). The spare tire access hole is accessible only with the rear hatch in the raised position. The hole is located at the rear of the trunk, slightly above the rear bumper.

Redrig,

Thanks, and I may take you up on the offer. Let me know what $$ you are looking for.

As for the jack, do you mean the panel w/ the rear window washer fluid tank ? I've opened that up and only see the tank and the " black box " for the 4x4 . Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong panel ?

i think derocha explained it better. if your willing to drive here and get it you can have it for free. ;)

just curious, do you know how long it would take you to drive to gettysburg?

I am unsure of what your exact lock problem is..

Do you mean when you push the unlock button from the driver's seat the rear hatch will not lock/unlock?

Rear hatch . The two long rods that exend out to the left and right side of the hatch. At the end , they work the hooks that grab the pin..

Gettysburg is maybe 2 hours. I'm 15 minutes from NYC .

Seems when I hit the lock button on the hatch ( open glass, and hit the black up/down button ) with my palm pretty hard it locks and unlocks.

I can live with this.
