I just repaired the trans in my brother's 1999 SOHC Explorer.
The thrust bearing on the intermediate planetary assembly had gone out. It got a bit of metal grindings into the transmission. I took everything apart and cleaned it in a solvant parts washer.
New plates in the clutch packs, new band on the overdrive. Replaced the planetary assembly that had the bad bearing with a used part from a well known transmission parts company. Everything cleaned like it had to be. Valve body disassembled and cleaned, then put back together. Also a new TC.
It drives fine, shifts like it should. But in 1st gear there is a rubbing/grinding sound. Grinding might be a little too strong a term, but rubbing sure fits properly.
It isn't there in any other gear and I don't notice it in reverse either.
I can't figure what it might be. Any thoughts would be wonderful.
Thanks,
Mr. HE
