Ok today after driving for a few hours around the city doing stuff my X(94) auto started feeling like it was dragging and taking forever to gain any speed with moderate use of the gas pedal. So I brought it to my mechanic only to tell me what I knew as soon as I opend the hood(transmission fluid is burnt). He told me to leave it so he could take a look at it tomorrow morning since he was closing early.

He also told me that once the fluid is burnt that it means there is an internal problem with the transmission and that it shouldnt be driven around I couldnt leave it there since I had no ride home otherwise. So Im bringing it in tomorrow morning to have him check it out, can anyone give an Idea on whats wrong with it so I dont get taken since I dont know to much about transmissions?

My father who is paying for the repairs said he refuses to put another new transmission in the truck if it needs to infact be replaced so I dont know what to do.

Not too many first gen's here that haven't cooked a tranny. They are garbage. Put a standard in. Your auto will blow again inside a few years of being rebuilt.

I would do that but I hate driving a stick inside NYC my brother has a jetta thats stick and I dont think theres much of a point in the city. keep in mind this truck is on its 5th a4ld now the one coming up would be lucky # 6 well unluck depending on how u look at it.

Is the switch over from the a4ld to I think its a (gm?) transmission a viable option? keep in mind that a new transmission runs avg $1700 for the a4ld around here.

A stick would be easiest

theres a kit to put a 700r4 in it. my advice if it still gets around okay.... change the fluid and trade it in.... for a newer explorer or escape without the a4ld in it.... if it looks good you might get a few bucks for it.... and save yourself the cost of the tranny,,

I'll prob end up putting the 700r4 in , and if I dont I dont want to get rid of this one (even though it looks pretty damn good ) I wouldnt get enough for it to make it worth it to me personaly I've invested alot of money and time into that truck and would rather store it as a project to be , If my dad sticks to his guns about not buying a new tranny then Its time for a newer X or something.

Ok so its done totally shot it took it 1 min literally to engage into gear this morning to drive it there and it only got worse as i drove.

ok guys I have some info from the shop thats going to do the rebuild,
they are gunna put in 6 planetary gears, the heavier bands , a bigger or more capable valve body, a z-pack for the clutch? , a shift kit, and a larger trans cooler.

If anything there sounds fishy let me know asap please seems like a good place hes running a computer check, hes checking all the harnesses, a pressure check and some other stuff, hes a member of the better business burero (sp?) and has been around over 20 years.

the estimate was $2,200 give or take on what I decide to do tomorrow when he calls me with the tear down.

bump*

Try to get a remanufactored unit not a rebuild. Ebay has some from good sources you can call & order directly. $2200 isn't a bad price. Most of it is labor I'm sure.

So are you going with the 700r4?

No, no where around here would take on the job with any type of a waranty so I went with a "heavey duty" a4ld with 6 planetary gears ,heavier bands a clutch pack, a larger trans cooler, new tq converter, new valvebody(he said its better then what was in there),a shift kit, and a new case. 18 month unlimited mile waranty. said its as close as you can get to bullet proof and will be done tomorrow morning and only went in yesterday afternoon.

He's got a big shop 11 lifts,(only does transmissions) has what looks to be very hi tech diagnostics he uses a snap-on moids diagnostic equip and some other stuff i dont remember the name of hes got shelves of ford parts in boxes and he got the case straight from ford today.

 its back all done shifts reaaaaalllllll nice , have no probs getting into passing gear I gave it some gas on the way home and was doing 85 before I knew it , I love it its great and can't beat the total of 1 & 1/2 days (brought it in tuesday half hour before closing so that doesnt really count for a day.
