Hello all,
My gas gauge was reading empty no matter what. I pulled the unit out and I had the good ol' sunken rotten float problem. I replaced the float for $10 and I thought my gas gauge problems were over! NOW, when I crank the explorer, the gas gauge goes to all the way FULL!

I can't get a break here!

Any ideas? (Glad I cut the access panel under the back seat.)

(The gas tank was about half way full and I watched the arm with the new float on it, float to the top like it was suppose to do when I installed the sending unit and float.)

Float Tank

We had a simular problem after replacing float, due to connector on top of the tank. From what i can remember, there is another connector a bit further away from the tank unit.... give it a check !

did you accidentally bend the arm for the sensor ?

there is a variable resistor in that thing, is it possible that by replacing the float , the one you put on floats too high, like on top of the gas and not semi submerged, like a factory float ?

Thanks for the tips and ideas.

I still have the access panel open so I can still get to it very easily. On mine (93 Eddie Bauer) there's one wiring harness that attaches to the top of the sending unit/fuel pump, and this harness runs along the frame to a big plug. This is where I disconnected it for removal. I'll check this out again.

If that doesn't work, I'll pull the unit out again and look it all over. The float I replaced it with looked just like the old one (except no holes) and I watched the arm moved freely when I installed it. Also, only half a tank so even if it was floating high, it still wouldn't stay buried to the full mark.

I really appreciate the ideas.

Plz keep them coming! I love this Forum. Already helped me alot! (Temp gauge, heater core, fuel gauge, and 4x4 issues)
