Hey Guys,

Searched for the past twenty minutes but it seems no one with newer explorers are putting exhausts on their trucks (at least not posting about it).

I have an '07 Limited 4.6 that needs a bit more sound. I have an 08 F150 4.6 w/ 40-series on it and its way, way louder then i want for the family hauler.

I'd like the 50-series SUV Here but i can't seem to find out which configuration of the muffler i'd need would be. Two exhaust places i called wanted like $180 for the muffler and i can find it online for $90. Rather buy it online and have the shop weld it on.

So to sum up, anyone know which one works with the 4.6 and anything special i should tell the shop before they weld it on (Remove certain cats, cut out resonator (if there is one))?

Thanks as always!!

-J

for ur 07 4.6 r u gonna do single flowmaster or single in and dual out flowmasters. I got single in and dual out 40 series flows on my 01 sport and i love how it sounds.

I am eventually gonna get get true dual exhaust

Not sure, what comes back off the manifold stock? I haven't had a chance to crawl under there and peek. Is it a single pipe?

I was planning on just having them cut out the stock, weld in the new one and hang a new section of pipe and bring it out behind the rear wheel.

I'm running a Magnaflow on my 05 4.6. Nice sound, but not overbearing or obnoxious. Went with a 2.25" direct weld in, no other exhaust work needed.

wolf- go to youtube and search sport trac exhaust. there is a black 08 V8 Sport trac with the FM 50 Series SUV that replaced the stock muffler and resonator. he used 2.5 in and 2.5 out offset. I will go this route when i make my move, i think it is the best sound on this engine. there are some other clips of other mufflers as well. i think the FM 50 SUV sounds best, but you can decide for yourself. FYI- there are some cat-back kits as well (magnaflow, etc...) if you are interested.

Also-where are you finding the 50 series SUV for $90? i cant find it for less than 115 (2.5in-2.5out).

Good Luck.

Magnaflow catback here. If you plan on keeping a spare tire you can pretty much give up on duals, or at least two pipes after the muffler, like an earlier poster mentioned because they won't fit.

2006 explorer limited duel tailpipes :(

2006 explorer limited, duel tailpipes :( i got a muffler with offset 3" inlet / 2.5" duel outlets...having problem getting someone to run duels (tailpipes) saying theres not enough clearence with gas tank, even with them runnin 2.5" pipe...ne suggestions? an no ..not wanting single t.pipe.. by there is a chance! i mite of found someone(he sounded like he could do it)he looked it up??or something...i will let you know..

you have duel t.pipes? right ? what did they do about the gas tank? i was told(06 limited v8)not enough clearence.

I called the shop today and he quoted me $150 to cut out of the old exhaust and weld in the 50 series SUV. He asked me to double check that its not a dual inlet/single out so i just crawled under there and looked. It appears to be single in/out but it looks like 3" not 2.5". Plus whats the huge can thing in front of muffler? Is that just a giant cat?

Here's some pictures to show what i'm referring to. Someone please enlighten as i'm not an exhaust guru:

and i'm guessing this is the actual muffler?

Thanks in advance!

Actually the first pic is the resonator

This could be correct. I haven't even gotten under mine once yet since ownership so I can't say for certain.

hi there i had a local muffler shop weld in a magnaflow muffler a few months ago on my 08 explorer 4.0 v6 and i kept the muffler but it looks like the first picture posted above. Did the muffler shop take the wrong piece off. do i have 2 mufflers on right now. please help. thanks

Looks like the shop took the resonator off by mistake. Take a pic.

will take a pic in the morning just charging my camera. but if they took off the resonator instead of muffler and put a magnaflow muffler on wouldnt my truck still be quiet. Because i would still have the stock muffler will try to take a pic underneath the truck too. And also isnt the 4.0 muffler like 22 inch well the v8 is like 14 inch.

The resonator will get rid of more noise than the stock muffler. Not sure what the v6 is but the v8 is about 16".

So should i tell them to cut off the resonator and the muffler and replace with the 50 series?

Hopefully, someone will chime in cause I have't seen what the stock v6 muffler looks like. But that's the resonator and it's before the muffler.

IMHO, you should dump both (stock resonator & muffler) and just install the new one for best performance.

Here's a pic of the factory v8 setup vs. Gibson.

I think i'll go that route and have them dump the resonator as well and just plumb the extra length of pipe.

I watched the youtube vid of the guy with the SportTrac with the 50-series SUV and it sounded nice. He also cut off the resonator. Here's the link if anyone is interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6zR5ML5f6E
