For those with Headers

I'm interested in buying headers for my Explorer. The only shop that I found gave me a "guess-timate" to install them at about $75 an hour for about 5-6 hours, so roughly $375-450. Does that sound reasonable? I don't have the resources or skill to do it myself so it looks like they're the only ones who can do it for me.

So to the point, does anyone know of other shops in the Bay Area, CA? Does the $450 for installation seem about right?

Hey Jorge -

Welcome to the Board, another owner from the San Jose area. Have you checked out the off road stores in San Jose and Santa Clara?

This may sound weird but how about getting it done at the dealer. Because the installation is so tight and tricky, the dealer has all the special tools and knowledge and may be able to get it done much sooner than a run-of-the-mill shop.

It sounds about right if you ask me... I installed my Headers myself and it was a B***h of a job... It took me close to 7-8hours Because I had to tap most of the hole for the headers... Driveing around town trying to find a tap took me about 1 hour.

I installed mine two weeks ago. The only problem I had was getting the cat bolts off. I ended up taking the entire exhaust off and grinding the bolts off the cat. the weekend before my attempt I sat my propane torch on each header bolt for several minutes and let them cool, then shot them with WD40 . Without the time spent running to the parts store and settling fights with my 2 year old twins, the whole job was 3 hours. Next is the high flow cat and 2.25 pipes

I think that 75/hour is a bit pricey. Most shops usually charge about 50/hour. But I have not been to a repair shop in about 2 years, since I purchased my 91 XLT. On a side note, I have owned chevy, toyota, and chrysler and the Explorer has been the most relialbe vehicle for me to date...
