On my 99 Ford Explorer while putting the rear differential back together i'm at the point where i'm trying to remember what side the bearing caps came off of.

Stamped in the middle of the bearing caps are two arrows pointing to one side like <<.

Are those arrows suppose to point inward toward the differential or outward toward the tires?

Thanks.

Thanks a bunch Alec. Problem resolved.

:burnout:

Sometimes the caps have a stamp in the middle and then a matching stamp on the pumpkin casting (that would be hidden by the cover & gasket). For intance, I have a front axle disassembled right now, one cap has a 'J' on it and a matching 'J' next to it on the pumpkin. The other cap has a sideways 'J' on it and a sideways 'J' on the pumpkin.

Just because your '>>' point outward doesn't mean that you couldn't rotate the bearing cap 180* and put it on the other side. Look closely at the gasket mounting surface near the caps. You may have to scrape off the RTV and any old gasket to find them.

If you need a picture, let me know.

Dave.
