Ford 9" rear end

I'm pretty sure welding the gears to the carrier is a bad idea, because if you ever want to go a different route, the carrier is trashed. I think welding the spiders to each other will do the trick though.

No offense but I'm looking for more than a "I'm pretty sure" before i start wleding stuff and break **** then have to make it a front wheel drive explorer...

Can anyone thats done it before help me? haha

Why not try searching?

Tried. Even google doesnt show me much except stuff that makes no sense to me. I need pictures, not text.

Side question - no chance the locker in a 9" would work in my 8.8" is there...

I meant searching this site.

No, the locker from the 9" will not work in the 8.8. And weld the spiders to each other, not the carrier.

After researching about welding spider gears, apparently its a very bad idea because it eats tires faster than I thought it did. Tires arent cheap here in canada...almost 175$ each just for the 275/35's on my truck right now...and theyre firestones....

So now im back at square one with the axle, thanks for the help from everyone so far, but I have more questions about the 9" axle.

Is there an easy way to find out if it will fit in my truck? Like a production number that tells me what vehicle it came out of? Or is the best way just to eyeball mounts and stuff and measure some things? As long as it goes in there without having to cut mounts off and make new ones and all that I'm fine with it. If I just have to cut brackets off and move them over or just make adapters and whatnot I'm up for it.

i think ur kinda rushing into this.. my suggestion is we calm down, save up for a few months, and then get a lunchbox locker - that'd make things so much easier in the long run.

I thought you already knew that when you started talking about welding up the spiders.

I knew it ate tires but not as fast as i thought that it did.

Yeah def go with a lunch box locker or something. The lockrite is available for roughly 240 if you hunt around

You shouldnt pay anything more than 250 for that locker.

There is no easy way to find out anything on a 9" without tearing it down and measuring some stuff. There is no ID tag, there is no stamping really that will give you any info. If you are still looking at this rear as an option, you're gonna have to get dirty. :) Dont worry, tearing down a 9" is super easy. You need to find out a few things-

What is the wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface measurement? If its too narrow it will not work. You need to put a tape on it.

What gears are in it? Go ahead and pull the shafts out and take the 3rd member out. Count the teeth on the pinion and the ring gear.

What lug pattern is it? As i said, if its in a car it will probably be 5 on 4.5 but you dont know. Throw a tape on it and see.

You will also probably need to move the spring perch pads (if it even has any)

You will need to have your driveshaft modified.

In the end, by trying to not spend any money you will probably spend $100-300 to get this thing in your truck. Go buy a locker for your 8.8 and be done with it. :)

Oh my bad, i didnt look carefully - i thought that was the NoSlip version.

:burnout: You are correct, the ford 9" is a very strong rear end. I had one in my 81 Buick/w a done 350 SB.Forget driving in the rain, even with good tires. Talk about a snakey machine, it was fun but boy do you need an overdrive with that one.
