Ha! I took the truck in for stalling, misfiring, and backfiring. The mechanic said that the oil from the K&N filter flooded the mass air flow sensor and made it go bad. So he replaced the mas and put in a Ford Air Filter. No word on bill yet, but I am an employee of this chain of dealerships and although Im no mechanic, I dont believe this bit about the K&N filter oil flooding the mas enough to kill it.

Well, I don't know for sure if the oil caused your problems, but when I bought my KKM intake, which is pretty much the same, the rep from KKM told me not to over-oil the filter because it will damage the MAS, and he said that the Ford MAS's are for some reason extra sensitive.

It could have been true, though I doubt it. He was probably just trying to make money on parts and hoping it would work.

FORD CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN

I am a Ford Technician and yes it can contaminate the Mass Air Flow meters hot wires (MAF), causing a lean fuel condition, and possible stalling, surging, bucking you name it. When the oil gets on the hot wires it makes them unable to transfer the heat properly so the comp underestimates the amount (in cubic inches) of air entering the combustion chamber, so the incorrect amount of fuel is injected then you get really crappy performance or immobilization of your vehicle. In my experience this usually happens after the customer cleans and oil his filter and tends to put TO MUCH OIL in the filter. Note : go easy on the oil. I never make anyone stop using the K&N I just tell them to be careful on how much oil.

By the way there is actually a TSB on using after market filters with impregnated oil to help catch debris sent out by Ford stating that damage done to the MAF due to the filter is not covered under warranty.

Re: FORD CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN

Well, I put the filter in new 10,000 miles ago and haven't cleaned or oiled it yet. I got a new tranny two weeks ago, since then I have had to have the 02 sensors replaced, and now this started happening two days after I got it back from that work...

If they replaced the O2 sensor because they where sticking lean (happens a lot in independent garages), the problem to begin with was the MAF. Usually when a MAF becomes conatminated it sets lean codes (lack of switching is the same thing ), for both banks due to a lean fuel mixture caused by a contaminated MAF (conatminated Maf will not set a code, it only sets codes if its signal becomes open or extremely out of range when the pcm compares it to the TP signal). If you ever have O2 sensors that you think are bad, always remember this, what are the odds that both O2's failed at exactly the same time, about the same as an engine locking up and a transmission failing at the same time. At my job we have a saying about O2's, that they usually don't die they are killed, in other words they fail because something is contaminating them. Or they are really sticking lean or rich because you actually have something causing a lean or rich condition. High fuel press (rich), vacuum leak (lean), contaminated MAF (lean), biased Ect (rich), etc...

If you where cheated on anything it was probably the O2 sensor repaired, I bet they where sticking lean due to the MAF being contaminated. However its to late know to now.

Re: FORD CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN

Hehe, well, thanks for the advice/advising. This is a Ford Dealership Service department, so it's not by any means a small set up. Yeah, the exact wording for the o2 sensors was "One is burned out, and the other is weak"
