hi everyone, am new here. i just wanna say that i have also a similar problem. i have a ford explorer 1996 XL 2WD 4.0L V6. i think it uses a 4R44E/4R55E transmission. the problem i have is that one day i was driving and the car just stoped. then it would only take reverse , no forward gears. i payed to get it towed home. then i let a friend drain the transmission fluid and it was black. i think it could of been mixing up with the coolant cause the coolant was looking weird too. but anyways , i changed the transmission fluid and the trans filter and still only getting reverse. i dont hear the shift noise anymore when i change gears. i only hear it when i put it in verse. at certain times it actually took drives , but for the most , the forward gears are gone. what should i do ? buy a valve body to do a full rebuild ?

Your clutches are probably burnt out and who knows what else. Yes, your transmission will probably need a full rebuild. I would recommend taking it to a professional if you have no experience with that kind of repair and don't have the tools for compressing clutch packs or those types of things.

Ford no forward gears

Thanks find, but ive repaired alot of things on my car that only * professionals * can do . all i have to do is buy the extra tools needed and use the transmission rebuild manual and video that i have. thanks for ur concern. but if we dont have faith in ourselves who will eh ?

not trying to sound like a broke record. if you have never rebuilt a trans before it can be a nightmare. there are special tools that you need to release certain springs. presses that remove certain drums and so own. i worked for a transmission shop at a ford dealership and i still take my cars in for service. stuff changes so fast in the automotive world these days if you dont do it every day it is hard to keep up. just my 2cents

if the trans fluid is mixing with the coolant , just changing the fluid was counter productive if you didn't investigate where it was mixing,
i would say the cooler in the radiator could be toast, and that is why the trans went, so without fixing whatever caused that too, it's just going to happen again,

hi i have a question.we took down the trans pan and found parts of metal in there. so we took the whole transmission down and found that the fun gear and forward planet geat were beat up pretty bad and the pieces were coming from them. could this have caused the transmission not to have forward gears?
