My 2001 Ford Explorer Sport had a new fuel pump installed the end of April 2009 and has been working fine until now. It has to be given gas when you first start it to keep it running. After a few seconds it is fine and works great after that. Any suggestions

Same problem!

I've been putting up with the same problem since I installed a less restrictive air filter. First I cleaned my IAC valve but it didn't really help. Then I replaced the IAC valve since it looked like an original but kept the old one. Problem continued. Next I cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner. Helped slightly but still have the problem. I disconnected and then reconnected the battery on several occasions to clear the learned settings which slightly helped. I finally decided that when the engine is in post-start/pre-warmup the increased air flow at idle is greater than the PCM can compensate for and the mixture is too lean. I'm in the process of installing a A/F ratio meter to prove or disprove my theory.

What engine do you have? Have you made any air intake modifications? If not, then you possibly have an air leak somewhere allowing unmetered air to enter the engine.
