99 Explorer EB 4.0 SOHC
99 Eddie Bauer 4.0 SOHC with almost 220xxx miles. It starts up, runs for awhile, but then dies and doesn't want to start back up. Normally if I let it sit for awhile it will fire back up. It is NOT throwing a check engine light. I have been hearing a rattle from underneath at idle, I thought it was the heat shield from the cat, but I suppose it could be the cat itself. I checked fuel filter, cleaned out MAF sensor and throttle body. I have been noticing some oil in the air intake tube (not sure if related). Like I said, it will run for awhile, maybe 50 miles or so, then it just dies, normally when I decelerate. I've also noticed the motor has been running hot, not overheating (according to the gauge), but it takes probably 3-4 hours for the motor to be completely cooled off after a 50 miles drive. Seems a bit excessive to me. I really don't know where to start. Fuel pump pressure? Throttle position or mass air flow sensor? Check cats?

my cat, either shield or cat is making a noise too! 🤣

usually when a fuel pump starts to die it will go out when its hot. anything correlated to amount of fuel in tank? can you measure presure?
also the ECT sensor has another one that sends to the truck, and one to the gauge, so that is also suspect if its when hot. that being said i assume it would be sooner than 50 miles to warm up 😅

those are the two i suspect tat the moment. i think the pcv tube leads to the intake tube so that could be part of the oil in the tube issue.

Could be the rear chain rattle too your hearing

Rear chain rattle? It sounds like it's coming from the rear end of the muffler or there is a smaller tube past the muffler, opposite of the 2 cats up front. Not sure what that tube is but that sounds like where the noise is coming from

he sohcs have rear timing chain too that can rattle and make noise. i know mine isnt that because it gets louder as it gets warmer, and plus if i unbolt them its quiet as can be
