Ford is putting engine #3 in my Exploder @34k

Well I turned the Exploder in on 05Feb and the new engine was to arrive in 10-15 days..........just found out it won't be here until 27Feb!!!!!!!!!

"Have you driven a Ford, lately?" NO!!!!
"Quality is job 1" my arse!!!

At this point the longer it takes the better, working the Lemon Law as soon as it comes back!

>I can say I have never been impresed with the >performance of the 4.0 (A 2.9 thats been bored over) >for its size. To me an engine this big should be getting >near 200hp stock not 155hp! If the Yota guys can >make engines soooo much better and soooo much >smaller and get soooo much more power and precision >out of them why can't Ford? If I could do it all by >myself I would have a Ford Explorer body/frame, a >Yota V8, a Dana 44 front, a nice GM auto Tranny, a >Dana 20 with a Klune between it, and a Dana 60 in >the Rear. To me that would rock. LOL I sure did pull >this off the subject huh?

What are you talking about the 4.0L V6 SOHC (replaced the OHV 4.0L) makes 207hp. All the guys I knew with big 'Yota's' replaced their oh my gawd blown yota engines with 3.8L V6 Buicks or 350 or 4.3L V6 Vortec Chevy's. So much for superior yota engines.

started the lemon law proocess

Well after my Exploder was in the shop for 24 days in Feb, I got it back on 01Mar. Sent in my Lemon Law request to Ford last week and now I will sit back and hope they choose to stand behind their product!

Lemons; ALL TYPES!

you guys need to realize something....every single car manufacturer out there has lemons. Blame the assembly plants- this is where the problems originate from due to negligence in assembly. I've seen so-called super reliable toyota's and saabs blow engines/trannys-- not uncommon. My friends V6 toyota SR5 blew the head gasket last week/cracked head too at 70k. So, i think many of you's are being screwed by bad dealers/mechanics. Believe me, NO ONE touches my cars unless I know everything they are doing....every part/receipt. I warn them about it before they touch it. And if they f@#k up.....they get it back again and again until they get it right. Be a PAIN IN THE ASS....that is rule #1. .....watch out for dealers, as sometimes even they tell ya a motor has been replaced when it hasn't....you got to prove it though!

The truth comes out...

You hit the nail square on the head and drove clear through the board, maxxus. Even the best cars (BMW, Audi, Land Rover) can be lemons. Yes, there are 4.0L motors that have just died... repeatedly it seems. Yes, there are many more 4.0L's that have been driven harder than anything should be and are still runnin' strong with no mods. Maybe you poor guys got the bad one in the bunch. Who knows? I'm really sorry that you've had trouble, but these things happen. A friend of mine has a '99 Dodge Dakota Sport 4-cyl. that is always in the shop. He doesn't even drive it hard. My bare-stock 4.0? It's fine. It just seems a tiny bit underpowered with larger tires on a heavy SUV. From what I've gathered from forums like these is that there are very few truly bad engine designs and the Ford 4.0 v6, and the 5.0, 5.4, and 5.8 v8's are not among them. Like maxxus said, be a dick until they fix it.

My friends suburban would all or a sudden shift into neutral and then into reverse while going above 55 mph. Well, that family is loaded so they get a new Suburban every year, but two of them have been lemons, it happens.

Any news yet?

I sent in the Lemon Law demand letter to Ford. They replied back, requesting that I go to the service manager. Talked to him and Ford agreed to kick in $3000.00 plus any rebates if I traded my Exploder in on a new Ford or Mercury. Since I thought I was just a little shy of having it declared Lemon...I took the offer and got a 2001 Ranger Edge w/$2000 rebate(yesterday). This is Fords last chance with me, if the truck turns out to be "crap" then I am finished with them!!!!

Your problem is not an uncommon one.... the tensioner problem I assume? I'm on my second-and-a-half engine... they replace the tensioners in the original (knocked from 3000 miles on) then replaced the engine, then replaced the tensioners in the new engine. Mine are the new design... I guess I was one of the guinea pigs for the current fix. There is a wraarnty extension related to the tensioner and exhaust o-ring problem... I don't have the info in front of me, but I can get it if you're interested. Believe me, I understand your frustration.... If you are buying it (not leasing it) have you considered hiring a lemon law attorney? You've got complete grounds for a case just based on loss of value if nothing else.

is my attorney's site.... I can't really recommend him, but he's got some good info there and can answer a lot of your questions.

Let us know how it turns out.

GIJOECAM - you mentioned an extended warranty for an exhaust o-ring problem. What' that all about?
Thanks.

Blown Head Gasket and/or Cracked Head

I have a '94 Ford Explorer with a solid maintenance record, low mileage (67,000 miles) and no prior major problems (other than recalls). Blew a head gasket two weeks ago and may have a cracked head - NO PRIOR WARNING!! The warranty has expired and FORD does not want to talk to me. Has anyone had a similar problem?? By the way, I loved my Explorer even with all of the recalls, but I probably held on to it too long.

okay i compare the 4.0 v-6 to the 4.9 straight 6

i had a 78 f-100 with the straight 6 and a 3 on the tree
i beat the **** out of this truck!! (jumped it daily, wrapped it up to 100 mph QUITE frequently (at the expense of many tickets and funny looks), dump clutch burnouts every friday night on the strip. i live in iowa and with no garage. EVERY day even 30 below she fired right up and purred for me!! EVERY DAY!!

we all know the straight 6 is strong

the 4.0 in my 92 x has seen 160+k (lost track with new tires at 130). ive replaced the 5-speed, and had heads machined and gaskets replaced because it was leaking AF. same deal. the expo sees more than its share of intersection air time, 120+ mph (had a grand prix pace me). and you know what still starts EVERY COLD MOURNING!!!

and i'm guilty i go 4-5k between oil swaps. havent replaced the plugs, wires, fuel filter in the 60k i've owned it. runs great.

i really suggest you take it to another dealer. maybe the just forgot to put oil in it after it got shipped there :)

my blood runs ford blue

Ford has just approved a new engine for my 98 EB V6 SOHC. I bought the vehicle used in January, had the 00M12 done in February, strange noises came back (knocking, rattling) in September (I think they were 01M01 related) and now Ford is replacing the entire Engine as well as the Catalytic Converter. I hope this solves my problems. I've owned 3 explorers and this one has had the most problems of all three and in the shortest amount of time. SHould I consider the (*gasp*) Chevy Trailblazer? Or the Acura MDX?

I've got a 98 4.0 SOHC in my two door Explorer...it hasnt broken down..but hell could they have one more recall PLEASE? surely theres somethin they havent replaced yet...... had the tensioners replaced about 10k miles ago, you can hear the damn things when it idles...just hear the chain sliddin over everything (pisses me off when people keep asking "whats wrong with your engine? "do you hear that?" "what kinda POS is that?"). Then theres the intake gaskets, throttlebody ...there was somethin else too. I've only got about 21k miles on it. It doesnt have anything on the bottom end but when it gets on the cams around 4k RPMs it moves pretty well for what it is...was good for 16.06@87.5 (maybe it was 85.7) in the 1/4.That was with a full tank, 3.33s(3.55s maybe, dunno whats in it) after a 45 minute interstate drive on a hot humid night...this thing should be 15s capable easy, pretty surprising. If it didnt make that freaking noise I wouldnt have any real complaint about it. (I did take it back...was told "those things are just noisy") So if it breaks and kills the engine F 'em..I wont feel bad.

Just don't hold on to it after the warranty runs out or you'll be where I am - replacing the head gaskets and maybe more at 67,000 miles. Two, going on three weeks and it's still in the shop.

Sideswipe.... The MDX is hot, my dads got one, i love driving the thing, handles like a car and its got Ba11$,
all with ground clearence and AWD.

TRUCK IS HOT!!!!!!!!!!!

and that Trailblazer kicks ass. looks cool, comfortable ride, and plenty of power.

Thanks guys for the opinions on those vehicles. If I ever do get rid of the Ford, its between those two vehicles, depending on a test drive. I'm holding on with Ford for a while.
