Hello all. I've found myself needing to replace or rebuild my 5.0 in my '97 X. I have come across Ford Racing's M-6007-X50 crate motor and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it. It's listed as being specificaly for the Explorer which sounds nice, but in my experience there's always something. Has anyone done this swap?

That engine looks nice. Looks like it puts down the same power to the wheels as the 2v 4.6L in the 3rd gens.

That looks like a fully stock motor off the assembly line. There is nothing wrong with it, if that's what you want. To me it looks like it would drop right in. I found some on ebay.

It comes complete with the crummy exhaust manifolds that many have seen crack. :)

Yeah, I've already ordered my TMH. I figured I'd take advantage of the engine being mobile. And yeah, I'm ok with stock, I use my F-250 for serious towing or work of that sort. But I thought the stock motor only turned around 200 lb-ft?

sounds good

please let me know how this goes because i wanna swap a ford racing 5.0 into my 99ex. i got a 4.0 cammy in now. this 5.0 i found was like putting out 412hp so its a desent upgrade. limme know and keep me posted on your experiences with swapping the engine.

Well it's gonna be 2 weeks or so before the engine gets here so I'll post some stuff then. I've already got mine out and that wasnt so bad. But I do wanna get my hands on the shoehorn they used to shove a 5 liter in this truck and then use it to beat the guy that designed it.

I suggest contacting FordStrokers.com about building a 302 based engine for any Explorer. Their pricing is likely the best compared to any other builder, plus their machine work is second to none. Their engines make more power given the same parts, for less. Their shipping costs used to be about $250.

The 96-97.5 Explorers with GT40 heads are easy to swap other 302 based engines into, since the head port pattern is the same. The later GT40P heads of 97.5-01's don't easily swap with other heads.

Meaning for a GT40 truck(exhaust manifolds do not have an EGR pipe in them) it's easy to install a 302 with any stock port location heads, like many TFS heads. For the later GT40P trucks I'd suggest installing GT40 headers with an EGR pipe bung added to them, that is if upgrading the heads to better than stock(TFS) etc.

Anyone can build a stock 302, crate engines can save time, but often many parts are not needed or not right for the application, costing you more in the end.

Hey, sorry it took so long to write back. I decided to wait to put the engine in untill I got my Torque Monster headers. So first off this is a direct drop in. I didn't believe it since it's almost never that easy, but it is. Now I can't be completely fair and say it's got a huge amount more power because I am complaring it to a pre GT-40 P engine and I added the TMH's and a Mac catback exhaust and intake. As the truck is now it will snap your neck back.
Install wise it was cake, the engine comes with the wiring harness and all vacumm lines already attached. The only wiring you need to install is the starter wires and the harness for the AC pump and alternator. This engine does not have the oil level sensor, so if you have the info center in your center console either that feature will not work, or you will need to swap oil pans. I took the plenum off that way I could tip the engine back to make the tolp trans bolts easier to get too. Also, install the accessories with the engine in already. It will clear fully assembled, but it makes things alittle more difficult. The one and only difference that I found between the engines is that the throttle body on the Ford Racing engine does not have the nipple for the crank case vent tube that the truck came with. I havent decided what I'm gonna do with it yet, but I will probably route it to the air box.
One thing to note, if you intend on changing the motor mounts like I did get the OEM ones from the dealer. They arent stocked by Ford anymore but they can get them from some company in Wisconsin that buys up NOS stuff from dealers. Anchor engineering is the only company that makes them that I could find and they are built to only handle up to 75 ft-lbs of torque. Spec is 109, they snapped like twigs. You also have to remove the front axle assembly to get to the motor mount to frame bolts, so be prepared.
