Ford Ranger with no power.

Hi I'm new here and couldn't figure out where to post except in the new members section. Anyway, I have an '01 Ranger XLT 4.0 that is getting horrible mileage and weak acceleration. It's almost like I can feel it studder or skip when I hit the gas. I've had it in the shop and they suggested I change the fuel filter. I did this and no luck. The spark plugs & wires are fairly new, and the air filter is new. After reading around the internet it seems to me like my catalytic converter may be plugged or I've got dirty fuel injectors. But I don't really know so I'm seeing if anyone here had any thoughts or feedback on what the hell to do.

...First, have you had your codes checked and second, I'm not sure about the mechanic you went to...This could be several things as well as a bad cat or a failing fuel pump..

Something really similar happened to me right after my cat went out. Haven't replaced it yet, but it happened right after the converter crapped out. Replaced the fuel filter, so I know that wasn't it. For me, anyway. Have the converter checked/replaced?

Cat problem on 01 Ranger

Your loss of power sounds familiar. Going through same thing right now. Changed spark plugs, nothing different. Changed fuel filter, nothing. Took off pre oxygen sensor. Power! Problem must be clogged cat. Took exhaust system off. Ran air into front cats, with no blockage. Rear cats would not allow air to pass through. Must be the problem. No direct replacement part will be mailed to me by all the online suppliers I looked at because I live in California! Wow. Must I go to the dealer and pay $700-$1400 for this part? Any ideas? What does everybody else do? Go to Midas Muffler?
