I don't know what happened in '98 but if you have been watching this message board there is a definate trend with major problems on '98 model year Explorers. I think the '98's are the best looking of the '95-'2000 but they seem to be cursed as far as reliability goes.

HUH??? I'm sorry, but a warning sounds like a Recall, and the only recalled hose that I know of is the power steering hose, and I can't see that causing your engine to seize. Whatever dealer you brought your Ex to HOSED you........

I'm beginning to think the 95 was a relatively good year for the Ex. Sway bar links, DPFE...other than that (KNOCK ON WOOD..BIG TIME..) at 85K so far so good.
Not so w/95 Ranger 4R44E tranny at 76k..

I agree w/my Tarheel cohort..

New, used...GET AN EXTENDED WARRANTY !!!!!!

Money very well spent.

The TSB fixed the whistle - I paid only to have the fluid changed.

Ford dropped the valve body and replaced a spacer plate. No more whistle.

I still find it refreshing that Ford actually addresses noise / vibration / harshness aggressively.

They have no mechanical reliability reason to fix the whistle - only reason is to ensure customer satisfaction.
