Hello everyone,
Bought a K&N drop in filter for my 96 4.0 limited, installed it on last Saturday, then I decided to retorque the bolts on the intake manifold, after I climb on top of my engine, guess what I found underneath the upper intake manifold, A BIRD NEST!!!!!
It's made of hay, feather and cigeratte butts, the cigarette butts had been torn carefully so the fiber was spread out, there was no birds in it. It was fairly big, it totally blocked the airflow underneath the upper intake manifold, It took me 15 minutes to remove the nest out of those hoses and sensors. I drive my explorer nearly everyday, I still can't figure out when those little things got a chance to do that.
With the K&N filter and the removal of the bird nest, I feel my truck much powerful than before, It feels like at least 10 hp gain, for the same degree of acceleration, less foot pressure is needed, I also expecting to see mpg improvement, but I don't know which did the magic, K&N or the bird nest? I has been getting 13 MPG, hope I will see better that that.
PS I didn't reset the computer right after I installed the K&N, it ran roughly, the mpg went down to 11. On Sunday I reset the computer by disconnecting the battery, then the magic appeared. I think eventually the computer will catch up the change, but it will take much longer than resetting the computer,
