Just finished fixing an exhaust leak and wanted to start the engine and hear the engine run and noticed this splashing sound. Ooops, took off the oil filter and forgot all about it. Emptied the engine in about 20 seconds.

DOH!

that's awesome. how's your driveway?

better yet, how is that engine? that is all bad, engines cant run without oil

Bam Bam engines toast huh (Well that is one way to so a full service) Oil and gaskets and welll a new engine

well, as soon as he caught it, i think the motor will be ok. as long as it didn't start to heat up.

That's a mistake you only make once.. It could be worse, you could have just filled it with expensive synthetic :banghead:

I've had two bad mtoorcraft filters before... they screwed on about four turns before stopping, so I thought they were sealed... they weren't. The threads weren't cut all the way, so it pumped about a quart and a half out onto the driveway... not fun at all...

I turned off the engine as soon as I heard the splashing sound, so no harm done to the engine. You can probably run your engine for a minute or so with no oil, of course not advisable. I was so pissed after I saw the lake I made in my garage (wish is was my driveway) I put the oil filter back on then started it backup and backed it off the ramp, also not advisable. My check oil light does work though, first time I ever saw that. Soaked the bottom of the drywall, so looks like I will be replacing that this weekend.

I went to Autozone and got a bucket of that oil absorber stuff. Looked like sand, worked ok but I think regular old cat litter works better. Engine took 4 quarts to fill it back up. So in the time it took to start it and give a rev or two drained 4 quarts. Maybe 15 seconds.

I had a similar situation happened to me,i was changing my oil and i left the rubber o ring from the oil filter stuck on the block,so when i put the new one on it didnt seat right, couldnt believe the pressure that oil was pouring out of the block,it was like a water hose turned on full blast, never again.......

Oh gosh thats bad. I would hate to have to be the clean up crew ha ha

I ran my 4cyl Mustang out of oil once. The whole engine had to be rebuilt. I blew a head gasket and warped a header. :( That's my bad!

I didn't run the car, but I was changing the oil in my car a couple weeks ago, and when the hot oil hit the drain pan cap that clips up so nothing falls into the pan, it knocked it down and sealed the pan. By the time I realized why exactly the oil was flowing onto the driveway it had pretty much drained 5 qts. Probably 3 ended up on the driveway. That sucked. Turned a 15 minute oil change into over an hour.

Been there, done that, got the driveway stain to show for it. LOL!!

My drain pan has a screw-in plug for the center, and a vent cap that has to be cracked. I've forgotten both before. The vent isn't a big deal... just maked a big 'glug' and splatters the oil.

The plug for the pan, however, that's a whole other mess. I realized it wasn't going down and 'luckily' still had the drain plug in my hand. Ever try and stick the drain plug back in the pan while the HOT oil's still gushing out??? Not fun.... not fun at ALL!!

Needless to say, that was another oil stain....

When empty I am tossing this new pan, and finding another like my old one, which could probably hold about 2-3 quarts if you forgot to remove the cap, unlike this new one my in-laws picked up for me when I did their oil. It holds about 2 tablespoons if the cap is in place.

You're lucky mate, my ears wouldn't have heard the splashing noise :)

been, there, done that. It sucks, especially when the piece of cardboard you put to lay on isn't big enough and you still have to lay on oil.

Daughters first oil change

2002 Mountaineer 4.6l :exp:

The daughter decided at 19 to do her FIRST oil change, wanted to do it herself (motive..bragging rights vs. the boyfriend)...

So showed her everything blah blah blah...ready to go, she starts it and wow a bunch oil oil spraying out of the filter...shuts it down, I have the son check for tightness (figured she didn't tighten it enough) he sez it's tight Dad, I check it and agree... So I pull the filter, and there it is the o-ring from the old filter still there. In 30 + years never seen this one before...now I always check the old one before I install a new one.

Lost oil => 1/2 quart 5W20 full synthetic Q, only 1/2 quart but it made a heck of a mess. I've heard stories of leaving the drain plug out, I can hardly imagine the mess that makes.

I have had this happen before.. Like you once it happens you always check and since then have found the old "O" Ring stuck 3 more times (different vehicles)..

Been there done that. I was helping my Dad change the oil in his Dump Truck. He was rushing me and got me out of my rhythm and I forgot to put the drain plug back in. Well he got all but about half a quart of the 5 gallons of oil out of a 5 gallon bucket in there before I realized what had happened. Luckily the drain tub was barely big enough to hold it plus what we drained in there so it didn't spill everywhere. But it's not fun pouring 5 gallons of oil in the top of the engine and it going directly out the bottom.
