I replaced the rear axle seal & bearing in my 2000 Explorer XLT 4x4 and added new oil (Mobil1 75-140). How do I know if I have the Traction-Lok axle that requires the Friction Modifier additive? Is it good to add it to a non Traction-Lok axle? Any other additive you recommend to add?

Look at your door sticker, it lists the axle code, if it say D4, D2, etc then it has a limited slip and you may need to add the modifier. If it's 2 numbers, 44, 55, etc then you don't need it. It wouldn't hurt it to add it to a non limited slip unit, but it's not going to help and is just going to be as waste of money. The friction modifier keeps the clutches from chattering, so if you can go around a corner now and the rear diff isn't chattering then your don't need it. If you do the prescribe method of adding it is to add it a little at a time until the clutches stop chattering.

Thank you for the information
I checked the door code and it's 46 so i don't need the modifier. My friend recommend to add BG additive - is it a good idea?

Sounds good, thanks

For future reference, Mobil 1 gear oils include a limited-slip additive.

I read it on their website but the website mention that in some cases you need to add the modifier
