Friends '91 B2600i 4x4 Front end binding

My buddy picked up a B2600i from a friend of his, pretty low miles, runs great but sat for quite a while. It needed brake lines, he had them replaced and has put a few hundred miles on it so far problem free until now.

Now when he drives, the best way I can describe it, Is the front end binds up and ten POPS preally loud and let's all that pressure off. For the life of me I can't think of what the part binding up is called so I figured I'd post on here for some more info.

It's got a manual transfer case if that matters at all. I know it also needs wheel bearings.

First, see if he has it in 4x4, on the manual shifter they are right next to each other.
Then, look at the hubs, maybe one is bad and engaging when it shouldn't.

When he showed me the noise, it was in 2WD. He said its the same, if not worse when in 4low

I would verify that it's actually in 2wd. Could be stuck in 4x4.

Ive got to work all day today, ill try to make it over there tomorrow and see if that could be the case..
