I have a 96 Explorer Sport 4X4 with the "ABS engaging while coming up to a slow stop" problem. It seems to be the front passenger side sensor as the truck pulls to the left a bit while stopping. Does anyone have any tips for removing and cleaning (or whatever) the sensors? I've heard the rotor needs to come off first. Thanks!

I also have the same problem with the ABS coming on when coming to a stop For some reason no-one here wants to help, or maybe just a few of us have this problem. Anyway over the winter I replaced my passenger side wheel bearing, the ABS sensor is inside the sealed bearing, so I don't think it's servicable by itself, the bearing is also expensive. Bit installing the new bearing didn't solve my problem, so unless it's the sensor in the drivers side wheel bearing, there is something else causing this problem. Sorry I don't have any more answers, if you do find a way to fix this please let us (especially me ) know!!!!

For some reason no-one here wants to help,

Not true, just an odd problem and everyone who usually helps is probably hoping someone with experience with this particular problem will chime in. We ALL want to help. Sometimes we can't. I'll do some research, join me.

Happy Exploring

Chris

I have a good deal of information on the factory CD for that year. Can you be more specific on driveability complaints? It's likely there is an abs code stored for this condition as it is a listed condition with it's own code set. I am assuming (duh) that as you are offerring complaints about the front wheel it's 4WABS. Let me know.

Happy Exploring and safe stopping

Chris

Actually, I was looking into this for someone else once....The sensor is mounted in the steering knuckle and is removable. The tone ring for the ABS is what is part of the 4wd sealed bearing.

I can't find the thread where I posted a picture, but the last post in this thread may help:

abs sensor dirty

dogfriend, you are one of the few guys who has actually taken the time to help me with things in the past, and I thank you.

I have asked this question before and someone else asked it last week and we never got any replies or leads at all.

if you cold find that pic it would be great!!

I assume the sensor has to bought from the dealer...($$$)

take care!!

Yes the sensor has to be bought from the dealer, and they have to be bought in pairs AND they are expensive. I had to replace mine a couple of years ago for the same reason. I still have mine if someone needs them we could work out something.

But each pair of sensors has a certain frequency or something like that that makes them unique per pair. That's what they told me anywas.

I had same problem until i pulled out the fuse for the abs now it doesnt engage no more..

well actually now i no longer have abs.. i actually think my braking ability is a lot better i read on the first generations that the abs was terrible

What fuse is that on a '93 XLT, I am about sick of my ABS after all these years...
