Front Axle U-Joints ?

I plan on changing my u-joints this weekend. Anyone have any tips or suggestions to make things go a little easier. I've never done anything this big before. Just brakes and transfer case motor, things like that. Is there anything I should watch out for or be careful of ?

Hi Eddie

To make changing U-joint easier, i'd go find a vise to put it in while you work on it.

Also remember to do the yoke caps FIRST! Then you're not banging away on a little piece of the driveshaft! I learned THAT little trick a few years ago from a Master Mechanic!

Don't hit the driveshaft anywhere but on the ends so you don't accidentally break the eyes or dent the tube...

Wear eye protection while smackin that puppy! I had a piece of road crud go into my eye while doing a u-joint removal once. Hurts like hell!!!

GET THE GREASABLE U-JOINTS!!!!!!!!!!

Personally, I'd argue with this.

Greasable joints are weaker than non-greaseable joints.

And joints are sealed; once you put them together, if they start to leak, you need to replace them.

So, a properly assembled, non-greasable joint is stronger, and will last just as long as a greasable joint.

when i was sitting back drinking a beer watching cmartin91 work on his axle, he smashed his thumb with a hammer on accident. his thumb split wide open.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've allready got the joints so there is no chance of getting greasable ones. As far as wolloping my thumb with a hammer, I'll try to keep all 10 digits in tacked.

I had wondered why they started selling U-Joints without zerks...Back in the olden days they were ALL zerk'd....

Hmm..Could I just be getting too old? Sniff...

And the non-greasable one's last just as long? Wow!
