Front axle wind up

Looking for some advice re my explorer 1996 4.0 AWD. It has recently started making noises from the front axle which has started to wind up ?? after a few miles the steering becomes juddery and noisy on full lock and only stops once I reverse the car on full lock to which it gives off loud banging noises before returning to normal

Sounds like the front axle is in drive mode. Have you definately got it switched off?

your running with 4 wheel drive engaged.
most likely high range.
if not engaged then the front drive shafts are free running.
