Hi,

I'm a newbee to this forum.

I have a 99 XLT 4.0L and was wondering if it's possible to fit a third seat in the front, or maybe get a larger passenger seat able to fit 2 persons.

I have talked to some of the Ford Dealers here in Denmark but they don't sell the Ford Explorer so they don't know (my car is imported).

Is anyone able to help me?

Regards,

Peter

the ford ranger has the same seat bracket i beleive... not sure on the model years though, but they do have a bench seat in some of them.... why do you want the extra seating?

It's because I don't have rear seat in it.

The cars here are very expensive. A new 2003 Explorer costs about $78,000. We have 205 percent tax on cars, but if you instead wan't to buy it only with front seats and take out the rear seat you only have to pay about 50 percent tax and that's what I did.

But without any rear seats I am only able to take one extra passenger and sometimes it's handy to be able to take two extra.

Regards,

Peter

$78,000 must be nice. why is tax soo much more for a back seat ?

um, wouldnt it just be cheaper to buy a back seat here in the states and have it shipped to your house? then you could have an explorer that seats 5 instead of 3

you could pay alot less if you got shipped over here bought a x and paid for it to get shipped back

I do have the back seat. I'm just not alowed to install them. If I do and I get pulled over by the police then I will have to pay the tax.

I guess the two seaters are cheaper in tax because they are ment to be used as delivery vans for companies.

The tax system is devided into two different type of cars. Ordinary cars and trucks with rear seats and cars without the rear seat. To be able to get the car with a low tax the lenght of the cargo space must be at least more than half the lenght of the total lenght of the car.

That's made some of the buyers very creative. How about a Porsche 928 pickup or a Camaro Pickup. That's some of the cars people has rebuild into pickups to get it on the low tax.

wow... that is some wierd laws.... i think you can toss in a bench seat from the ranger.... but what about your center console? i think you would lose that as well..... and i guess you cant get around the law and have the rear seats, then get pulled over for them, fold them down flat, take that to court and get it dismissed? maybe you need to move to the :us:

Yes, the laws are very weird.

I can't even fold down the rear seats because the cargo space must be installed with another floor which is in level with the rear bumber and the seat belts must be removed and you should not be able to open any rear windows or open the doors from inside. There is also installed a small screen behind the front seat.

I can take a few pictures of it and poste it. How do I do that?

I'll see if I can't get my hands on some seats from the ranger. I know that's it's been sold here. I know I have to lose the center console but I would rather have an extra seat.

Thanks for your help.

peter

I miss the bench seats

I used to have in my pickup. My dog used to lie on the bench seat with his head in my lap as I drove. Those center consoles are a waste of space anyway. Hardly ever have the rear seats up in my X. Think of it as a pickup with a cover.

well, only elite explorers can post pics directly off their computer... but if you email me the pics at jimabena74@hotmail.com i will post them on here for you... i want to see the explorer pickup .... and, my dad's 98 ranger has a 3rd seat in the front bench seat.... it really isnt a bench seat, more like a 60/40 bench seat.... when the seat back in the middle is folded down, it is an armrest and there is storage space in it... enough for some cds and change and other junk

Okay, I just went outside and took some pictures of it.

I have posted them on Dead Link Removed

Could I get you to take a picture of the bench seat from your dad's ranger. I think it's like a 60/40 I'm looking for.

Regards

Is it possible to keep the drivers seat and just get the larger passenger seat or do I have to buy both?

What about putting the rear seat you have in the front somehow? Dont know if its possible though.

Anything is possible with enough fab work, but putting the rear seat up front would be impractical, IMO. You would have to fab up something very strong to bolt to the stock bolts up front and to the rear seat's bolt locations, and you'd have to find some way to raise the rear, as there's an incline in the rear seat's mounting system.

Explorers do come with a 60/40 bench seat. My 95 had a 60/40 bench seat. You could buy one here and have it shipped over there. Oh and welcome to the site.
