New here please forgive if this has already been dealt with elsewhere.

I'm getting ready to replace front brake pads. This is not a 4wd so do we repack the front wheel bearings in the same manner as any none front wheel drive vehicle. If so what is the torque setting for front bearings.

Thanx

Dave

You do not have to do anything with the front wheel bearing if you are going to replace the brake pads. You only have to remove the two bolts that attach the caliper to the knuckle and can proceed with pad replacement.

Caliper bolts torque is 24 lb-ft

If you really meant the wheel hub three bolts in a 2x4, their torque is 83 lb-ft. Do not mess up with the wheel hub if you do not have to. These bolts are very difficult to get loose.

Thanks for the response I will follow your advice.

Getting a bit long in the tooth. A few years ago it always seemed to be recommended to repack the front bearings while the rotor was being stripped down for a brake job.

The front wheel bearings on my '02 2WD Ex cannot be repacked. It is a sealed unit and sold as an entire hub assembly. Just pull the caliper and shoes and the rotor can then be removed to get it resurfaced.

Your bearings are sealed units, so no repacking needed (or possible).

The only this I would do is to check that the bearings are okay while you happen to be up under there - these bearings are a known problem area with Explorers. I replaced both of my fronts at 87K miles or so.
