Recently changed the pads on my 2006 4x4 using oem pads from a ford dealership. Original brakes had 55,000 miles on and still had 6mm of pad left. I talked with a service advisor who said I could probably get away with just changing the pads and not turning the rotors. So it has been about two months and all of a sudden every morning when I apply the brakes it sounds like a barking seal for the first few rotations of the wheel. After that it is usually quiet for the rest of the day. It seems to be worse when it is foggy or its near moisture like sprinklers. Any help is much appreciated. This is driving me crazy and I am afraid I might be damaging something.

I would have put new rotors on also, and lubed the heck out of the caliper slide pins while I was at it. I don't mess around anymore with just replacing pads, or turning rotors.

I had some new pads that were noisy for the first 2-3 weeks and suddenly went silent. The pads sometimes have a break-in material on the top layer that needs to be worn off from driving.

I did have my rotors turned at the same time that I installed pads.

You may want to be sure that your calipers aren't sticking.

You have 2 separate issues:
1. Noise issue. Assuming your rotors are in fact fine, then the noise issue is simply the result of the pads. Did you bed them in properly? I suspect it's simply morning sickness (as we call it). Changing the rotors won't help that sort of noise.

2. Rotors OK or not? My front rotors were starting to get rust creeping under the braking surface. So I just changed them out.

Like someone else said, I simply don't bother taking the chance anymore. Rotors aren't that expensive when you consider the amount of miles you have put on them. Especially because everything is coming from China! Even turning is taking a risk.

I was wondering why they recommended new front brake pads when 6mm remained?

Yes, my local Ford dealer does not recommend 6mm pads to be replaced.

like i said 6mm is yellow, some sell brakes, others dont, its up to the tech.

Yes "yellow" is convenient for some purposes.
