my question is i have a 97 awd 5.0 explorer. the front differential is toast. is there a difference between a 4wd and a awd one?

also is the grear ratio the same in the front as in the back axle.

no difference, a 4wd diff will work. And yes get the same gear ratio as you have in the rear axle.

Stay away from the '95 diff, its got a vacuum disconnect that that later ones dont have.
