If its the V8 with the viscus coupler then yes. If its the V6 then no.

Ford took off my front drive shaft and I drove it around for a while before they got a new one.

does it really hurt it?

cauz i have a v6 with the bw 4405 and drove it for a few days w/o front D/S. i then swapped in a 1354 and drove that in 2wd mode for 2 weeks w/o a front D/S

to my understanding, all of our awd tcases use a viscous coupling as the viscous fluid is what hardens up due to temperature change when the front D/S starts "slipping".

It depends on which V6 AWD system you have. Ill let the 6'er experts answer that one.

As long as you have a 2WD setting you can. I've been driving about a near without any front driveline.

what about an "Auto" setting? i dont understand why it would matter whether or not there is a front D/S or not.. i hope some1 can educate me!

I have my driveshaft out. I have AUTO, and I have had no problems. I once got a 4wd hi and low blinking lights, but it went away and it didn't leave any codes (I scanned it later that week). Basically, take the driveshaft out -- it won't hurt a thing

EDIT: The reason you do not need a front driveshaft is because your tires are still moving forward and I believe our transfer cases are rotating constantly. In turn, the computer and everything else still lines up. Now if you have AUTO and go on ice and it's trying to kick it in and out of 4wd, you may have a problem when it noitces the front wheels are driving because there isn't a driveshaft.
