Hi guys- in the event that my first attempt did not get through, I need some feedback and shall do my best to relay this situation as comprehensively as I can. I have a 1998 Eddie Bauer edition SOHC 4.0 4x4. In the beginning the 4x control would not shift into low range. Also during normal acceleration in 4 auto it was fine. upon "punching" the throttle to go up hill there is a popping or clunking coming from somewhere underneath. I wasn't sure which end it was coming from so I removed the front prop shaft. There was no noise at all under the same conditions. I replaced the transfer case shift motor and reinstalled the front driveshaft. I now have a working 4 auto/4 hi/ 4 low system, but the popping persists. I have also lifted all four wheels off the ground and went thru all three modes- all are working. I know it's tough to speculate from where you are, but could a hub bearing or a front axle do this intermittently? Thank you in advance
