2000 XLT
Hello,
I have a 2000 Explorer XLT with all wheel drive. For 5 months or so now the service advisor has been telling me I need a new left front tire and a front end alignment. I finally made an appointment for after work and took it in. The advisor quoted $89.00 for the alignment and 160 for the tire and install.

I said fine. Have at it. Went to wait in the lounge and a half hour later the advisor was there with the mechanic who does the alignments. They claimed that I needed 4 new tires, 3 of them are less than 6 months old, and a "full blown" alignment. Their reasoning was that since the tread wear on the rear and front tires differed, that this difference in overall tire diameter would result in the transfer case getting torn up.

Told 'em to go ahead and put the truck back together as it was when I brought it in. Also I expected there would be a charge for an estimate. My question is, were they just trying to sell me some extra tires or was this all on the up and up?

you have a solid rear axle, you cant align the rear, so they were yanking your chain. 6 months of tire use wont change the tread enough to warrent replacing all four tires. replace the crappy tire with your spare. i cant remeber off the top of my head how much difference there can be within all 4 tires. hopefully someone who knows can chime in.

ExplorerDMB, Thanks for the link to that. It helped a lot. Looks like I'll be getting a new set of tires. Thanks to all of you who responded so quickly.

Put the "better" tread on the back ones, and burn them off to equalize the wear :burnout: :D
