I had my '97 sport on the beach for the 1st time this week and put it into 4WD High, when making tight turns I hear banging or loud clunks coming from what I'm going to assume are the CV axles. 180K miles on original axles, new front drive shaft CV joint (3K miles), new transfer case (3K miles), all ball joints look to be good.

There are no problems with steering. Street driven with the selector set to Auto. No noises in tight turns, in Auto, but could be some resistance Im sensing.

Would I expect to hear the clunks/bangs during turning in 4WD High? I didnt test 4WD Low. Do I have a problem or headed for a problem?

thanks in advance

That is normal in 4wd when there is too much traction and the wheels can't slip. Either leave it in 4-Auto on the beach or switch to 4-Auto when making a tight turn and lock it in 4-Hi when you straighten out. I do that when driving in town in a bunch of snow just so the front end doesn't plow straight when making a tight turn. It's not a big deal.
