I bought it knowing it needed transmission work, it was leaking severely and had no reverse. I swapped the transmission with a known good one from my XLT.
Still no reverse and there's a load banging coming from the front end on turns, it's like axle wind up.
It happens when turning and it can be felt as well as heard.

Any idea on the banging?

Sounds like its stuck in 4high. Check the transfer case.

Thanks my98nnj.

I was thinking, the XLT the transmission and transfer case came from used to make a knocking sound in the front that I thought was CVs.
It happened when accelerating, I thought it was because a percentage of power was being diverted to the front wheels and that made the front axle CVs knock.

Maybe it was actually the transfer case? The noise it's making now is much louder though.

I just tried disconnecting the transfer case motor, that didn't work; then I took off the front shaft - that did work.

The CV or uni joint in the front shaft maybe?
