'96 Eddie Bauer
Sorry, I'm new and posted this first in wrong forum so am re-posting in this forum:

My '96 4.0L Eddie Bauer with 4wdAuto has a continuous hum or whine from the front end at all speeds and down to almost 0mph. Don't think it's the tires as I can hear them separately and they change sound as the pavement changes. Put in a new right front wheel bearing for a different noise but think the left bearing is OK. The front drive shaft turns all the time but I guess that's normal. Noise has stayed the same since I purchased at 84,000mi (now has 120,000mi). How does one find out whether it is the CV joints, front axle, front driveline or something else? Any ideas?

I have a 95 Eddie with 115K. I also thought the left bearing was OK. While truck was on jackstands I removed brake calipers, put wheels back on and spun both of them. The right one made noise while left one was quiet. Replaced the right one. About a month later I did the left one just to be on a safe side. I noticed it got even more quiet and smooth. I'm not saying that it's definately the left bearing, but don't exclude that possibility. I'm also a big believer of fixing things "in pairs" when it comes to steering, suspension and brakes.

Just my $.02

Have you checked the fluid level in the front differential and the transfer case?
