I tried looking this up for I don't know how long and I can't be the only one thats run into this problem. AnywayI have a small issue, on both my 95 and 96 explorers the front end thumps in 2wd mode but as soon as I'm in 4auto it stops so I been driving around in 4auto since its no different than the 97+ex's in auto mode it doesn't bother me but I'd like to get to the bottom of this issue because the way I see it is the axle is probably not properly disconnecting which is causing the thump so if this is the case that the axle is having issues like this I'm afraid that someday the axle isn't going to connect when I need it to. How can I fix this? What could be causing it not to disconnect correctly if this is the problem? Is it possible to replace the right side axle shaft to just convert this to a live axle application?

Thanks for readin hope someone can either point me in the right direction or help me solve the problem.

Update: Last night while driving home I tried putting the ex in 2wd mode again and for a couple miles it was fine but noticed when pulling out somewhere last night and this morning that when I pulled out and would get wheel slip I got vibrations in the front end like it was in 4auto but yet not completely in (this happened in the 95). From what I read in other threads that when in 2wd that the 4auto function in the transfercase was not active, but so far from my understanding it seems like the transfercase is active all the time as to maybe thats why ford created the CAD to begin with? But still the problem persists then with the axle not disconnecting properly, I been searching for diagrams of the axle but cannot find one if anyone could help I'd appreciate it. Thanks:thumbsup:
