front end lockup

Hi Guys,im new to this forum,i have a 94 explorer sport4x4/w a m5r1 5 speed,my problem is when i take off for the first time of the day,the front tires lock up tring to take off,it will back up,but when i try to go forward the front tires wont move then then all of a sudden they break free and i can take off,if i let the truck sit for 20 min or so it will do it again.i jacked the front end off the ground both tires spin free and so does front drive shaft.with the front end on the ground the front drive shaft still spins free,when i start it up and try to pull forward its pushes the front tires untill they break free again,but at anytime the truck will backup.the push botton fwd works fine high and low.can anyone help thanks tannk69

How cold is it? Maybe ice?

I'd be wary of driving that on the road while you are experiencing issus like that... if it locks up on you while driving at speed you may end up having a really bad day!

Pull your wheels, check your brakes and bearings, to isolate the front axle you can remove the locking hubs.

I urge you to fix it before you drive it though.

X2 You more or less will be able to see something messed up with the front end pulled apart and like wood1 recommended pull the hubs off first and put the wheels back on and see what it does.

no,there is no ice,its cold out but truck is clean

brakes and bearings are fine,the hubs are auto,i will try with hubs off tomorrow and let you know.thanks

Also once it breaks free is there any odd noises, grinding, popping etc...?

to let you guys know,i had taken apart cleaned and lightly greased hubs,replaced shift fork in trans case,new shift motor,everything was fine for the first to weeks.thanks tannk69

it makes a bang when it breaks free,truck literally pushes front tires about 3 feet,this only happens going forward not backwards,when i drive down the road its fine,if i push the 4x4 button it makes a little bang.4x4 works fine,high/low comes out easy to

hi guys i dident get a chance to look at truck to day,had to work on wifes truck today.its are only transportation,she has a 93 sport.one of the fuel injectors o-ring was leaking,had to take off pletum and replace o-rings.ill work on it tomorrow thanks for your ideas.tannk69
