The front output shaft nut on my transfer case is proving impossible to remove. I have a '91 Explorer. Should it just turn or is there some trick that I'm missing such as left hand threads or a lock ring or some other form of keeper that I'm unaware of? If not any ideas to get it loose?

YOu probably need an impact gun - because an impact gun takes advantage of inertia to break nuts loose.

I've always had luck using a 1/2 inch drive ratchet/socket and a mini sledge.

Leverage. Three-foot long 1/2" drive breaker bar with a cheater pipe, and a heavy duty prybar to hold the yoke in place should do the trick. :)
